Chapter 19: The Truth Behind Daniel’s Betrayal
Nobody spoke after my mother’s words.
Not Victoria.
Not Richard.
Not my uncle.
Not even me.
Because for days, I had been building a simple story in my mind.
There were victims.
There were villains.
There were people who hurt me and people who tried to save me.
But now everything had become complicated.
And I hated that.
I hated that Daniel, the person who had caused me the deepest pain, might also have been fighting the same people who hurt me.
I looked at him.
“Explain.””
Daniel lowered the phone.
My mother was still on the line.
“Emma—”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“Not another excuse.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
For once, he didn’t argue.
He didn’t defend himself.
He simply looked broken.
“I knew about the plan before we got married.””
The words still hurt.
Even though I already knew.
“I found out my father and your uncle were working together.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Daniel continued.
“They believed combining our families would give them access to the trust.””
“So you married me.””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
The honesty burned.
“But not for the reason you think.””
I laughed sadly.
“That’s exactly what someone says when they know they’re guilty.””
Daniel accepted that.
“I was supposed to follow the plan.””
My hands tightened.
“But?””
He looked down.
“But then I met you.””
Silence.
“I was supposed to see you as a way to get something.””
He swallowed.
“Instead, I saw the person who stayed up all night helping strangers at work. The person who cried during sad movies but pretended she didn’t. The person who trusted everyone because she couldn’t imagine hurting anyone herself.””
My eyes filled with tears.
I hated that his words still reached me.
“I fell in love with you.””
I looked away.
“Then why did you keep lying?””
“Because every time I tried to tell you, they threatened you.””
“Who?””
“Everyone.””
He looked at my uncle.
“Your uncle knew I had changed.””
Then Victoria.
“My mother knew too.””
Then Richard.
“My father discovered I was trying to expose them.””
Richard looked down.
“I was wrong,” he whispered.
Daniel continued.
“They started preparing a backup plan.””
“The one where they made me look unstable?””
He nodded.
“The documents. The medical history. The financial records.””
My chest tightened.
“They wanted everyone to believe you were incapable of controlling your own life.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the floor.
All those moments.
All those lies.
All those nights I questioned myself.
They had been building a trap around me.
“But you still hurt me.””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I know.””
“You let me believe you laughed because you agreed with them.””
“I panicked.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
“I know.””
The room went quiet.
Because he finally understood.
Love didn’t erase damage.
Intent didn’t erase consequences.
Then my mother spoke through the phone.
“Emma.””
I lifted it.
“Yes?””
“There is one more thing.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course there was.
“What?””
“The person who arranged the accident…”
Everyone looked at the phone.
My mother continued.
“It wasn’t your uncle.””
My uncle looked shocked.
“Then who?””
A long silence.
Then my mother said:
“Rachel.””
The room froze.
My heart stopped.
“No.””
My mother’s voice was full of sadness.
“I’m sorry.””
“Rachel?””
The friend who betrayed me.
The woman I thought had been used.
“She wasn’t just involved with Daniel.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I didn’t know.””
My mother continued.
“She was working with your uncle before she ever met Daniel.””
I felt sick.
The coffee shop.
The confession.
The tears.
Was all of it another performance?
“She knew about the trust,” my mother said.
“She knew Daniel was supposed to marry you.””
I covered my mouth.
“No.””
My mother continued:
“She got close to you because she needed access.””
Everything suddenly made sense.
The friendship.
The trust.
The years.
Rachel hadn’t entered my life by accident.
She had been placed there.
My phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
From Rachel.
*“I know you know.””*
Then another.
*“But you still don’t know the whole truth.””*
A final message arrived.
*“Ask your mother why she really disappeared.””*
I stared at the screen.
My mother went silent.
“Mom?””
No answer.
“Mom?””
Then, quietly, she said:
“Emma…”
Her voice broke.
“There’s something I never told you.””
I looked around the room.
Everyone was watching.
“What?””
My mother whispered:
“The accident wasn’t only about the trust.””
May you like
A pause.
“It was because of you.””
