Chapter 18: The Mother Who Never Left

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

I couldn’t speak.

Nobody could.

The room watched me as if I had suddenly become someone else.

A different person.

A person whose entire life had just changed again.

“Who is this?””

The voice on the phone trembled.

“Emma.””

My knees almost gave out.

No one had said my name like that since I was a child.

Not with that softness.

Not with that familiarity.

“Mom?””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Everyone froze.

Victoria covered her mouth.

My uncle whispered:

“No.””

The woman on the phone cried.

“Yes.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“This isn’t possible.””

“I know.””

“You died.””

“I know.””

I walked away from everyone.

Away from their faces.

Away from their secrets.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“I’ve been hiding.””

My heart broke.

“You let me think you were dead?””

“I never wanted that.””

“Then why?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because I thought they would come after you.””

I closed my eyes.

“Who?””

Silence.

Then:

“Everyone you’re standing with.””

I turned back.

Every person in the room looked terrified.

“Mom…”

“I know what you found.””

“How?””

“Because I was the one who sent the first message.””

I froze.

The unknown sender.

The warning.

The clues.

It was her.

“You’ve been watching me?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I’ve been protecting you from a distance.””

I laughed through tears.

“Protecting me?””

The irony was painful.

“Everyone says that.””

“I know.””

“Everyone lies to me and calls it protection.””

“I know.””

Her answer was different.

Because she didn’t defend herself.

She accepted the pain.

“Emma, listen to me.””

I sat down.

“Tell me everything.””

She was silent for a moment.

Then she began.

“I survived the accident.””

My hands shook.

“I was badly injured. I couldn’t return because the people behind it thought I was dead.””

“Who?””

“I didn’t know at first.””

A pause.

“Then I found out.””

“Who?””

Her voice became quiet.

“Your uncle.””

I looked at him.

He immediately shook his head.

“No.””

My mother continued.

“He wasn’t alone.””

I looked around.

“Who else?””

The answer came slowly.

“Daniel’s father.””

Richard stepped back.

His face turned white.

“What?””

My mother continued.

“They were working together.””

I stared at Richard.

“No.””

My mother’s voice trembled.

“Richard found out later. That’s why he tried to expose them.””

Richard looked devastated.

“I didn’t know.””

My mother replied:

“I know.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Victoria.

“And you?””

Victoria started crying.

My mother’s voice softened.

“She made mistakes.””

Victoria looked shocked.

“But she wasn’t the one who tried to kill me.””

For the first time, Victoria looked completely broken.

My mother continued.

“Emma, there’s something you need to understand.””

“What?””

“Your marriage was never supposed to happen because of money.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

A pause.

“Because Daniel was supposed to keep you close.””

My heart tightened.

“He was a spy?””

“No.””

My mother hesitated.

“He was a pawn.””

I looked toward the door.

Daniel was standing there.

Nobody noticed when he arrived.

His face was filled with pain.

“Emma.””

I turned.

“How long have you been listening?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My mother heard his voice.

“Daniel is there?””

“Yes.””

Silence.

Then my mother said something unexpected.

“Give him the phone.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because he deserves to hear what I know.””

I handed him the phone.

Daniel lifted it slowly.

“Hello?””

My mother’s voice changed.

Not angry.

Sad.

“Daniel.””

He closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

The words shocked me.

My mother said:

“I know.””

Daniel looked down.

“I never wanted this.””

“I know.””

“I did terrible things.””

“Yes.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“But you also tried to stop it.””

Daniel looked at me.

I froze.

“What?””

My mother continued:

“Emma doesn’t know everything you did after you realized the truth.””

The room went silent.

Daniel whispered:

“Mom…”

Everyone turned.

Because nobody understood.

Then my mother said:

“Daniel didn’t betray you completely.””

A pause.

“He spent the last year trying to destroy the plan from inside.””

I stared at him.

May you like

And for the first time in days…

I didn’t know who the villain was anymore.
