Chapter 9: The Name Hidden in the Past
I didn’t sleep that night.
Neither did Zoe.
Neither did Ethan.
The flash drive sat on the kitchen table for hours.
Nobody touched it.
Because sometimes the truth is more frightening when you know it exists.
Finally, just after midnight, I picked it up.
“I’m watching it.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Chloe.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Strangely calm.
“I’m done living in fear of what I might find.””
Zoe connected the flash drive to her laptop.
The folder opened.
There were three files.
One was labeled:
*Hospital Hallway.*
One was labeled:
*Private Conversation.*
The last one had no name.
Just a date.
The day Lily was born.
I clicked it.
The screen went black.
Then a hospital room appeared.
My hospital room.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
The camera was hidden.
Placed somewhere near the door.
I saw myself lying in bed.
Exhausted.
Holding newborn Lily.
Tears filled my eyes.
That was the happiest moment of my life.
Then Ethan walked into the room.
Younger.
Smiling.
He kissed my forehead.
“I love you.””
I remembered that.
I remembered feeling safe.
Then the video changed.
A few minutes later, Vanessa entered.
Her face was tense.
She looked at Lily.
Then at Ethan.
“What did you tell her?””
Ethan frowned.
“About what?””
“Don’t play stupid.””
“I’m not.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You told her everything was fine?””
“Because it is.””
“No, Ethan. It isn’t.””
I watched myself sleeping in the background.
Completely unaware.
Vanessa looked toward me.
Then whispered:
“She can’t know.””
My heart raced.
Ethan lowered his voice.
“She deserves the truth.””
“Do you?””
A long silence.
Then Vanessa said:
“You’re forgetting something.””
“What?””
“You signed the papers.””
My body went cold.
“What papers?”” I whispered.
The video continued.
Ethan looked terrified.
“I never thought it would happen.””
Vanessa smiled.
“You didn’t think you’d have a daughter.””
I stopped breathing.
Zoe looked at me.
“What does she mean?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
Then the video captured the sentence that changed everything.
Vanessa leaned close to Ethan.
“You agreed that if the paternity test came back negative, you would disappear.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Ethan.
He was crying.
“What is she talking about?””
He didn’t answer.
“Ethan.””
His voice was barely audible.
“She’s talking about before Lily was born.””
I stood up.
“No.””
“Chloe—”
“No.””
I backed away.
“You thought Lily wasn’t yours?””
He looked broken.
“I was scared.””
“You signed papers?””
“I was manipulated.””
“But you signed them.””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
The pain was worse because it was true.
I turned back to the video.
Because I needed to know everything.
Then Vanessa’s voice came through again.
“The test results come tomorrow.””
Ethan looked nervous.
“And if they’re positive?””
“Then you stay quiet.””
“And if they’re negative?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Then Chloe loses everything.””
The video suddenly glitched.
Then one final frame appeared.
A document.
A hospital document.
With a signature at the bottom.
Not Ethan’s.
Not Vanessa’s.
Someone else’s.
I leaned closer.
Because I recognized the name.
The person who signed it was someone I trusted.
Someone who had been there since the beginning.
Zoe whispered:
“Chloe…”
I looked at her.
Her face had gone completely pale.
May you like
Because she recognized the name too.
The signature belonged to my own mother.
