Chapter 8: The Woman at the Door
The knocking came again.
Harder.
More demanding.
Not the knock of someone asking to come in.
The knock of someone expecting to be obeyed.
Ethan immediately moved toward the door.
I stepped in front of him.
“No.””
He stopped.
“Chloe.””
“You don’t get to protect her anymore.””
His face tightened.
“I need to talk to her.””
“No. You need to answer me first.””
Another knock.
Then Vanessa’s voice came through the door.
“Ethan, I know you’re in there.””
My skin crawled.
“She followed you?””
Ethan looked away.
That was enough.
“You told her where you were.””
“No.””
“Then how did she know?””
He didn’t answer.
Zoe walked beside me.
“She always knows.””
Vanessa knocked again.
“Chloe, open the door.””
I laughed quietly.
The confidence in her voice was unbelievable.
After everything she had done, she still believed she was in control.
“You want to talk?”” I called out.
A pause.
“Yes.””
“Then talk.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa said:
“I know what you saw.””
My heart raced.
“You mean the video?””
“Yes.””
Ethan looked terrified.
I noticed.
And that scared me.
Because for the first time, Ethan wasn’t afraid of Vanessa hurting him.
He was afraid of what she would reveal.
“You recorded yourself,” I said.
Vanessa laughed softly.
“I recorded the truth.””
“You recorded a private conversation.””
“I protected myself.””
I opened the door slightly.
Not enough for her to enter.
Enough to see her.
Vanessa looked calm.
Perfect hair.
Perfect makeup.
Like she hadn’t destroyed a family.
“Chloe.””
I stared at her.
“You touched my daughter.””
Her smile disappeared.
“I made a mistake.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You made a choice.””
Her eyes hardened.
“You really think you understand what happened?””
“I understand that you grabbed a five-year-old.””
“And you assaulted me.””
The accusation hung between us.
There it was.
The story she wanted everyone to believe.
“You hurt my child first.””
Vanessa smiled.
“You always make yourself the victim.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Vanessa, stop.””
She looked at him.
And something changed.
“Are you really choosing her now?””
Nobody answered.
Vanessa looked amused.
“You’re unbelievable.””
She reached into her purse.
Ethan’s face went pale.
“What are you doing?””
“I’m giving Chloe what she wants.””
She pulled out a small flash drive.
“This is the full recording.””
Zoe stepped closer.
“Why give it to us?””
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
“Because he forgot who saved him.””
I stared at the flash drive.
“What’s on it?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Everything.””
“Everything about what?””
“About the night Lily was born.””
Ethan’s voice became urgent.
“Vanessa, don’t.””
She ignored him.
“You deserve to know what your husband did.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Is there something else?””
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Vanessa held out the flash drive.
“Watch it.””
I didn’t move.
“Why?””
Her expression changed.
For the first time, I saw something other than arrogance.
Fear.
“Because after you watch it, you’ll understand why Ethan never left me.””
My fingers tightened.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
She looked directly at Ethan.
“Tell her.””
He stayed silent.
Vanessa laughed.
“That’s what I thought.””
She placed the flash drive on the table near the door.
Then she stepped back.
“One more thing.””
“What?””
Her eyes moved to me.
“The person who almost took Lily from you…”
She paused.
“It wasn’t me.””
My breath stopped.
“Then who?””
May you like
Vanessa smiled.
And walked away.
