Chapter 2: The Secret My Husband Buried
The drive to my sister’s house felt unreal.
Lily sat quietly in the back seat, hugging her stuffed rabbit against her chest.
Every few minutes, I looked in the rearview mirror to check on her.
She looked so small.
Too small to understand why the people who were supposed to love her had made her cry.
When I arrived at Zoe’s apartment, she was already standing outside.
The second she opened my car door, she wrapped me in a hug.
“You’re okay,” she whispered.
I wasn’t.
Not really.
But I nodded because Lily was watching.
“I’m fine.””
Zoe looked at me with a sad expression.
“No, you’re not.””
Inside, she made hot chocolate for Lily and took her into the living room with a blanket while I stood in the kitchen, staring at nothing.
Finally, I asked the question that had been burning inside me.
“What recording?””
Zoe went quiet.
That scared me more than anything.
“Chloe…”
“Zoe, what did you hear?””
She opened her phone.
“I need you to listen to this.””
My hands started shaking before she even pressed play.
At first, there was static.
Then Ethan’s voice.
“Zoe, you can’t tell Chloe about this.””
My heart dropped.
The recording continued.
Zoe’s voice came through.
“Ethan, are you serious? Vanessa admitted she grabbed Lily.””
“She was just upset.””
“She grabbed a five-year-old.””
A pause.
Then Ethan said something that made my entire body go numb.
“I know Vanessa goes too far sometimes.””
Sometimes.
Not once.
Not accidentally.
Sometimes.
Zoe stopped the recording.
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
She swallowed.
“There’s more.””
“Play it.””
She hesitated.
“Chloe—”
“Play it.””
The next part was Ethan again.
“I just need you to keep this from Chloe because she’ll overreact.””
I laughed.
But there was no humor in it.
Overreact.
That was what he called protecting my daughter.
The recording continued.
“I don’t want my family falling apart because Chloe can’t handle Vanessa’s personality.””
Zoe’s voice became sharper.
“Your family? What about your wife and daughter?””
Silence.
Then Ethan answered.
“I’m tired of being stuck in the middle.””
I looked toward the living room where Lily was coloring.
My little girl.
My entire world.
And suddenly I realized Ethan had been standing in the middle because he wanted to.
He wasn’t confused.
He wasn’t trapped.
He was choosing.
“How long have you had this?”” I whispered.
Zoe looked away.
“Two months.””
I froze.
“Two months?””
She nodded.
“Ethan came to me after another incident.””
My stomach twisted.
“Another incident?””
Zoe sat down.
“Chloe, Vanessa has always been mean to Lily when you weren’t around.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“No.””
“I didn’t know how bad it was at first.””
“No.””
“Then Ethan asked me to delete the recording.””
I stared at my sister.
“And you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I’m your sister. And because someone needed to protect you when your husband wouldn’t.””
I looked back at Lily.
The girl who used to run into Ethan’s arms every morning.
The girl who called him her hero.
A painful thought entered my mind.
How many times had Ethan watched Vanessa hurt her feelings?
How many times had he stayed quiet?
My phone suddenly rang.
Ethan.
I almost ignored it.
But Zoe shook her head.
“Answer.””
I pressed the button.
“What do you want?””
His voice was cold.
“You need to come back and apologize.””
I stared at the phone.
“You’re serious?””
“Yes. My family is furious.””
I closed my eyes.
“My daughter was hurt.””
“She wasn’t hurt.””
“She cried.””
“Because you scared her with your reaction.””
I felt something inside me snap.
“You are defending her again.””
Ethan sighed.
“Chloe, stop making this bigger than it is.””
Then he said something I never expected.
“Also, Vanessa wants Lily to apologize to her.””
I couldn’t speak.
My five-year-old daughter.
Apologizing.
To the adult who grabbed her.
I hung up.
For several minutes, nobody said anything.
Then Zoe quietly picked up her phone again.
“There’s one more part of the recording.””
I looked at her.
“What part?””
Her expression changed.
Like she already knew it would destroy me.
“The part Ethan really didn’t want you to hear.””
She pressed play.
May you like
And the first words I heard were Vanessa’s voice.
“Once Chloe is gone, Ethan, you and I need to talk about what happens next.””
