Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Lies

I didn’t follow Ethan when he left.

That surprised me.

A week ago, I would have.

I would have chased after him.

I would have begged him to explain.

I would have tried to save our marriage before asking whether it deserved saving.

But sitting there alone in that coffee shop, I realized something.

I had spent years fighting for a man who wasn’t fighting for me.

I took a picture of Vanessa’s message before Ethan’s phone disappeared out the door.

Then I called Zoe.

“He knows I saw it.””

Her voice became serious.

“What happened?””

“I met him.””

“And?””

“He admitted Vanessa has controlled him for years.””

“Did he tell you why?””

“Not everything.””

I looked at the document again.

“He’s hiding something bigger.””

Zoe was quiet.

Then she said:

“Chloe, I think you need to talk to someone else.””

“Who?””

“Someone who worked with Ethan before you met him.””

“Why?””

“Because I found a name on the contract.””

I sat up.

“What name?””

“An attorney.””

My fingers tightened around my phone.

“Zoe.””

“I searched the name. She represented Ethan when the agreement was created.””

“And?””

“She also represented Vanessa.””

A chill ran down my spine.

“Same lawyer?””

“Yes.””

That wasn’t normal.

Not for a contract between two people who supposedly had separate interests.

“Find out who she is,” I said.

“I already did.””

I stopped.

“Zoe?””

“She has an office downtown. And Chloe…”

“What?””

“She was the person who helped Ethan change the ownership papers after you got married.””

My heart sank.

“After we got married?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Because suddenly the timeline mattered.

Ethan hadn’t just hidden something before our marriage.

He had continued hiding things after.

That evening, Ethan came to Zoe’s apartment.

I didn’t invite him.

He showed up anyway.

When I opened the door, he looked exhausted.

“Can we talk?””

“No.””

His face fell.

“Chloe.””

“You don’t get to come here whenever you’re ready.””

“I’m trying to fix this.””

“You had seven years to try.””

He looked toward the living room.

“Can I see Lily?””

My hand tightened around the door.

“She’s sleeping.””

“Please.””

“No.””

His eyes filled with frustration.

“She’s my daughter.””

“And I’m her mother.””

“I love her.””

I stared at him.

“Then why did you stand there while your sister hurt her?””

He had no answer.

Finally, he whispered:

“I was wrong.””

It was the first honest thing he had said.

But it wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

“What happened after you left the coffee shop?””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“Vanessa texted you.””

He froze.

“You saw that?””

“Yes.””

A long silence passed.

Then Ethan sat down on the hallway bench.

“She knows.””

“Knows what?””

“That I’m done protecting her.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Are you?””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me everything.””

He covered his face with his hands.

“I can’t.””

I felt my anger return.

“Why?””

“Because if I tell you, you’ll hate me.””

“That stopped being a possibility a long time ago.””

He looked up.

And the sadness in his eyes almost made me forget how angry I was.

Almost.

“When I was twenty-four,” he said, “I made a decision that changed everything.””

“What decision?””

“I covered up something Vanessa did.””

The room went silent.

“What did she do?””

Ethan’s lips parted.

But before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the caller ID.

His face turned pale.

“Don’t answer it,” I said.

But he already had.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Even from where I stood, I recognized it.

Vanessa.

Ethan listened.

Then his expression changed from fear to shock.

“What do you mean she found it?””

I stepped closer.

“Found what?””

Ethan looked at me.

Then he whispered:

“Vanessa said the original recording is gone.””

My heart raced.

“What original recording?””

He ended the call slowly.

May you like

Then he said the words that made my blood run cold.

“The one that proves what really happened the night Lily was born.””
