Chapter 3: The Truth Behind the Perfect Husband
I listened to Vanessa’s voice again and again.
Not because I wanted to.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
“Once Chloe is gone…”
Those four words kept replaying.
Zoe watched my face carefully.
“Chloe, I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“What?””
“No. I need to hear the rest.””
She pressed play.
The recording was muffled, but every word was clear enough.
Vanessa spoke first.
“You know Mom and Dad always wanted you to be with someone who understood this family.””
Ethan answered quietly.
“Vanessa, don’t start.””
“I’m just saying Chloe has never fit.””
My hands curled into fists.
Ethan didn’t defend me.
That hurt more than Vanessa’s words.
Then Vanessa continued.
“She thinks she’s better than us.””
“She’s not.””
“Then why are you always choosing her?””
A pause.
A long one.
Then Ethan said:
“I’m not.””
My chest tightened.
Zoe immediately stopped the recording.
But I had heard enough.
I walked into the living room and sat beside Lily.
She looked up at me.
“Mommy?””
I forced a smile.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Are we going home?””
The question broke me.
Because home was supposed to be where she felt safe.
Not somewhere she had to wonder if people wanted her there.
“Not tonight,” I whispered.
She nodded slowly.
“Are we still a family?””
I swallowed the lump in my throat.
“Yes.””
Because I meant it.
But I didn’t know if Ethan did.
The next morning, I woke up to thirty-seven missed calls.
Most were from Ethan.
The others were from his mother.
The messages were worse.
*You embarrassed our family.*
*Vanessa is considering legal action.*
*You need to fix this.*
Not one message asked if Lily was okay.
Not one.
I made coffee while Zoe sat across from me.
“So what are you going to do?””
I stared out the window.
For years, I had tried to keep peace.
I apologized when I wasn’t wrong.
I swallowed my anger.
I told myself marriage meant compromise.
But there was a difference between compromise and betrayal.
“I’m going to find out the truth.””
Zoe nodded.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She reached into her bag and pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written across the front.
“Where did you get that?””
“From Ethan.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He gave it to me three weeks ago.””
“Why?””
Zoe looked uncomfortable.
“He said if things got worse, I should give it to you.””
I stared at the envelope.
“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””
“Because I hoped you’d never need it.””
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a printed document.
At first, I didn’t understand what I was looking at.
Then I saw the names.
Ethan Carter.
Vanessa Carter.
And beneath them…
A financial agreement.
My eyes moved across the page.
It wasn’t about money.
It was about ownership.
About control.
About a secret Ethan had kept from me since before our wedding.
“Chloe?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because at the bottom of the document was a signature.
A signature dated six months before Ethan proposed to me.
I looked at Zoe.
“What is this?””
She took a breath.
“The reason Ethan always protected Vanessa.””
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
From Ethan.
I opened it.
And my hands went cold.
*“I know Zoe showed you the recording. But she didn’t show you the part where I explain why I did it.””*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
*“You need to know what Vanessa has been holding over me for seven years.””*
