Chapter 7: The Video That Changed Everything

The video sat on Zoe’s screen like a threat.

Nobody wanted to press play.

Because everyone in that room knew something terrible was waiting on the other side.

Finally, Zoe looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

I stared at the attachment.

For seven years, I had lived inside a version of my life that someone else had written.

My husband.

His sister.

Their secrets.

Their excuses.

I was done being protected from the truth.

“Play it.””

Zoe tapped the screen.

The video opened.

At first, it was dark and shaky.

A hospital hallway.

The timestamp showed the exact night Lily was born.

My breath caught.

I remembered that hallway.

The same pale walls.

The same uncomfortable chairs.

The same vending machine near the elevator.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She was younger.

But the expression on her face was the same.

Cold.

Controlled.

She was standing near the nurses’ station, holding her phone.

Then Ethan appeared.

My heart tightened seeing him.

The man I loved.

The man who had promised to stand beside me forever.

On the video, he looked terrified.

Vanessa’s voice came through the speakers.

“You really think you can walk away from me now?””

Ethan’s younger voice answered.

“Vanessa, stop.””

“After everything I did for you?””

“You helped me with money.””

“I saved you.””

“No. You trapped me.””

The video shook as Vanessa moved closer.

“You don’t get to pretend you’re innocent.””

Ethan looked around.

“Keep your voice down.””

“Why? Afraid Chloe will hear?””

I froze.

Even hearing my name from seven years ago felt painful.

Vanessa smiled.

“You’re going to tell her eventually?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

That silence said everything.

I felt my hands go cold.

Then Vanessa said:

“Tell her how you protected me.””

The video paused for a second.

A nurse walked past.

Then Ethan whispered:

“I told you I would handle it.””

My stomach dropped.

“Handle what?”” Zoe whispered.

The video continued.

Vanessa leaned against the wall.

“You think you’re better than me now because you have your perfect wife and baby?””

“I’m not talking about this here.””

“You should thank me.””

“For what?””

“For making sure you never lost everything.””

Ethan’s voice became angry.

“You’re the reason I almost did.””

Vanessa laughed.

Then she said something that made my entire body freeze.

“She doesn’t even know the baby was almost taken away.””

I covered my mouth.

Zoe looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

The video continued.

Ethan looked furious.

“Don’t bring Lily into this.””

“I’m not.””

“You already did.””

A long pause.

Then Vanessa said:

“Tell Chloe the truth. Tell her how close she came to losing her daughter because of your mistake.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

The silence felt heavier than screaming.

I turned slowly toward Ethan.

“What was she talking about?””

He looked broken.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

I stood up.

“No. I’m done hearing that.””

“Chloe—”

“You keep saying you were going to tell me.””

My voice shook.

“You were going to tell me about the contract. You were going to tell me about Vanessa. You were going to tell me about the accident.””

I pointed at the phone.

“And now this?””

Ethan stood.

“Lily was never in danger because of you.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He closed his eyes.

“After she was born, there was a mistake at the hospital.””

“What kind of mistake?””

He looked at Zoe.

Then back at me.

“Vanessa tried to use it against me.””

My heart pounded.

“What mistake?””

Before Ethan could answer, there was a loud knock at the door.

Everyone froze.

Zoe looked through the window.

Her face changed.

“Chloe…”

“What?””

“She’s here.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Who?””

May you like

Zoe stepped away from the window.

“Vanessa.””
