Chapter 4: The Secret Contract

I stared at Ethan’s message until the screen went dark.

Then I turned it back on and read it again.

*“You need to know what Vanessa has been holding over me for seven years.””*

Seven years.

The same amount of time we had been married.

The same amount of time I had believed I knew my husband.

I looked at Zoe.

“What does he mean?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“Zoe.””

She sighed and sat beside me.

“I don’t know everything.””

“You have a document with both their names on it.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

She looked down at the paper in my hand.

“When Ethan gave this to me, he said it was insurance.””

“Insurance for what?””

“I asked him the same thing.””

“And?””

Zoe hesitated.

“He said Vanessa knew something that could destroy his life.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“What kind of something?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the signature at the bottom of the page.

Ethan’s handwriting.

Real.

Not fake.

Not misunderstood.

Real.

I folded the document carefully.

“I’m going to see him.””

Zoe immediately shook her head.

“Chloe, don’t go alone.””

“I need answers.””

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

“You’re hurt.””

“Yes.””

“And he knows how to make you doubt yourself.””

That sentence hit harder than I expected.

Because she was right.

Ethan had always been good at that.

Whenever we argued, he never yelled.

He stayed calm.

He lowered his voice.

He made me feel like I was the emotional one.

Like I was the problem.

But this time was different.

This time, I had proof.

“I’m not going there to fight,” I said.

Zoe looked at me.

“Then why are you going?””

I looked at the photo of Lily sitting on the refrigerator.

A picture from last Christmas.

Ethan was holding her on his shoulders, both of them laughing.

“I’m going to find out who my husband really is.””

Ethan agreed to meet me at a coffee shop near our old neighborhood.

Not our house.

Not his parents’ house.

A neutral place.

When I walked in, he was already sitting at a table near the window.

He looked tired.

For a second, I saw the man I loved.

Then I remembered him telling me to leave.

I remembered Lily crying.

I sat down.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, Ethan sighed.

“Chloe—”

“No.””

He stopped.

“I’m not here for an apology.””

His jaw tightened.

“Then what are you here for?””

I placed the document on the table.

His face changed instantly.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You gave this to Zoe.””

He looked away.

“I didn’t want you finding out like this.””

“Finding out what?””

Silence.

I leaned forward.

“Ethan, I need you to understand something. I spent seven years defending you. I defended you when people said your family was controlling.

I defended you when Vanessa insulted me. I defended you when your mother blamed me for things I didn’t do.””

My voice shook.

“But I will never defend you for allowing someone to hurt our daughter.””

His eyes dropped.

For the first time, he looked ashamed.

“I didn’t allow it.””

“You watched.””

“I didn’t know what to do.””

“You were her father.””

He looked away.

That answer hurt more than any argument.

“What is this contract?””

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

“It’s complicated.””

“Explain it.””

He was quiet for almost a minute.

Then he whispered:

“Before I met you, Vanessa helped me.””

“With what?””

“My business.””

I waited.

“My first company was failing. I had debt. A lot of it.””

“And?””

“She paid it off.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she wanted control.””

The words came out slowly.

“She invested money into the company. But there were conditions.””

I looked at the paper.

“What conditions?””

Ethan swallowed.

“She became a silent partner.””

“That doesn’t explain why you obey her.””

His eyes met mine.

“It wasn’t just business.””

The coffee shop suddenly felt too quiet.

“What else?””

Ethan looked down.

“She threatened to expose something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan.””

“I made a mistake when I was younger.””

“What mistake?””

He closed his eyes.

“I thought I could fix it.””

A terrible feeling settled over me.

“Did Vanessa know before we got married?””

He didn’t speak.

That was my answer.

“You let me marry you while your sister had power over you?””

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He looked away.

“After we were stable.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Stable?””

I pointed at the table.

“Our entire marriage was built on a secret.””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it?””

His voice cracked.

“Fear.””

For one moment, I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Then I remembered Lily.

“What did Vanessa want from you?””

Ethan stared at the floor.

And then he said something I never expected.

“She wanted me to choose her over you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She always said you would leave eventually.””

“And you believed her?””

“No.””

“Then why did you act like you did?””

Ethan’s phone suddenly buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

The color drained from his face.

I noticed.

“Who is it?””

He locked the phone.

“Nobody.””

“Ethan.””

He stood up.

“I need to go.””

I grabbed my bag.

“No. You don’t get to run again.””

But before he could answer, his phone buzzed a second time.

This time, the screen lit up long enough for me to see the message.

May you like

It was from Vanessa.

*“If Chloe knows about the contract, she’s already too close to the truth.””*
