Chapter 15: The Night Lily Almost Disappeared
Ethan arrived before Vanessa did.
That alone told me he was scared.
Not nervous.
Not worried.
Scared.
He walked into the house and immediately looked toward Lily’s room.
“She’s sleeping?””
I nodded.
“She’s safe.””
The words made him close his eyes.
Like he needed to hear them.
I stood across from him.
“Tell me about the night you almost lost Lily.””
His face changed.
He knew exactly what I meant.
“Chloe…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Not another secret.””
He sat down.
“After Lily was born, Vanessa started investigating everything about us.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted a reason to break us apart.””
“And?””
“She found something.””
“What?””
Ethan looked at his hands.
“The hospital made a mistake.””
My heart sank.
“The paternity test?””
“Yes.””
“But you said Vanessa changed it.””
“She did.””
“Then what mistake?””
He took a breath.
“When Lily was born, there were two babies with similar names.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The hospital mixed paperwork temporarily.””
I stared.
“No.””
“It was fixed quickly.””
“Then why did Vanessa use it?””
“Because she saw an opportunity.””
My stomach twisted.
“She told people Lily wasn’t ours?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“She told people Lily wasn’t yours.””
The words hurt.
“What?””
“She tried to convince my parents that you weren’t stable.””
I felt sick.
“She wanted custody.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you stop her?””
“I tried.””
“Did you?””
He looked down.
“No.””
That answer hurt.
“I was scared.””
“Again.””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“Because Vanessa had something worse.””
“What?””
A tear fell from his eye.
“She had a recording of me agreeing to let her handle the hospital situation.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
“It means if she twisted the story, it looked like I helped her.””
“You did help her.””
“Yes.””
He didn’t fight it.
“I was trying to fix my mistake.””
I looked away.
“And now?””
“Now I want to tell the truth.””
Before I could respond, headlights appeared outside.
A car door closed.
Vanessa.
Ethan stood.
“She’s here.””
I walked toward the window.
Vanessa stood outside holding a folder.
Not angry.
Not screaming.
Calm.
That was worse.
She looked directly at the house.
Then she smiled.
My phone rang.
Her name appeared.
I answered.
“What do you want?””
Her voice was soft.
“I want to finish the story.””
“You already ruined enough.””
“No, Chloe.””
A pause.
“I’m the only person who can prove Ethan wasn’t the villain.””
I looked at Ethan.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa continued.
“Ask him why he really stayed married to you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“He’ll tell you it was love.””
A pause.
“But the truth is…”
Her voice lowered.
“He needed you.””
I felt confused.
“Needed me for what?””
Vanessa smiled through the phone.
“Ask him about the money he hid in your name.””
I turned toward Ethan.
His face went pale.
And for the first time…
He looked more afraid of me than Vanessa.
“Ethan?””
He didn’t speak.
“Why is she saying you hid money in my name?””
Silence.
Then Ethan whispered:
“Because I did.””
I felt my heart drop.
And outside the window, Vanessa watched us.
May you like
Smiling.
Like she had been waiting seven years for this moment.
