Chapter 16: The Money in My Name
For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.
The room felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
All I could hear was Ethan’s confession repeating in my head.
*“Because I did.””*
I looked at the man standing in front of me.
My husband.
The father of my child.
The person who had promised to build a life with me.
And somehow, after seven years, I was still discovering hidden rooms inside him.
“What money?””
Ethan swallowed.
“Chloe…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
That scared him more than yelling.
“Answer the question.””
He sat down slowly.
“After Vanessa started controlling the company, I realized I needed a way out.””
“So you hid money.””
“Yes.””
“In my name.””
“Yes.””
I felt something crack inside me.
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa couldn’t touch your accounts.””
I stared at him.
“You used me as a hiding place.””
His face fell.
“That’s not how I saw it.””
“But that’s what happened.””
“I was trying to protect us.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I pointed at him.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
He didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
Outside, Vanessa was still standing by her car.
Watching.
Waiting.
She wanted this.
She wanted me angry.
She wanted Ethan exposed.
But there was something I noticed.
She wasn’t smiling anymore.
Because Ethan wasn’t denying anything.
And maybe that wasn’t part of her plan.
I walked toward the door.
Ethan stood.
“Where are you going?””
“To ask Vanessa why she’s suddenly interested in telling the truth.””
I opened the door.
Vanessa looked satisfied.
“I knew you’d come out.””
I stepped onto the porch.
“You knew about the money.””
“Yes.””
“Did you force him to hide it?””
Her smile faded.
“No.””
“Then why tell me?””
She looked toward Ethan.
“Because he doesn’t deserve to be seen as the victim.””
I almost laughed.
“Neither do you.””
Her eyes hardened.
“I never said I was.””
That answer surprised me.
For the first time, Vanessa sounded honest.
“You destroyed my family.””
She looked at me.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Your family was destroyed long before I arrived.””
I hated that a small part of me wondered if she was right.
“What do you want?””
She opened the folder.
“I want you to see everything.””
Inside were bank statements.
Contracts.
Emails.
I didn’t take them.
“What are these?””
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
“That Ethan wasn’t hiding money because of me.””
I looked back at him.
“What?””
Vanessa held up one document.
“Look at the date.””
I stepped closer.
The date was from six years ago.
Before the money was transferred.
Before Ethan opened the account.
The signature belonged to Ethan.
But there was another signature.
My mother’s.
I felt sick.
“Why does my mother keep appearing everywhere?””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Because she knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That Ethan was planning to leave.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Ethan.
“Were you?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You were going to leave me?””
“Chloe, no.””
“Were you?””
He looked broken.
“After everything happened, I thought I was protecting you by making sure you had money if I wasn’t around.””
I stared.
“You were preparing to disappear.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew this.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her voice lowered.
“Because Ethan came to me first.””
The world went quiet.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“He begged me for help.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Vanessa—”
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“For once, she deserves the truth.””
I looked between them.
“What did he ask you?””
Vanessa’s answer came softly.
“He asked me how to leave without losing Lily.””
My heart sank.
I turned to Ethan.
“Is that true?””
His eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The pain was immediate.
Not because he wanted to leave.
Because he had planned everything without me.
Again.
Before I could speak, Vanessa’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
She listened.
Then her face went pale.
“No. That’s impossible.””
She ended the call.
I noticed.
“What happened?””
For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.
“Someone found the original evidence.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“What evidence?””
Vanessa looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“The evidence that proves I wasn’t the person who changed Lily’s records.””
