Chapter 14: The Mistake That Ruined Everything

I took the letter home.

I didn’t read it immediately.

I couldn’t.

Because deep down, I already knew.

Whatever was inside would change the way I saw Ethan forever.

He sat across from me that night.

For once, he didn’t try to come closer.

Maybe he knew he had no right.

“Your father told you.””

It wasn’t a question.

I looked up.

“You knew he was alive.””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

He swallowed.

“Three years.””

The pain was immediate.

“Three years?””

“I found him after Vanessa moved away for a while.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was trying to find a way to protect you.””

I laughed.

“Do you even hear yourself anymore?””

He looked away.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like you decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””

“I thought if you knew everything, you would be targeted.””

“By who?””

He didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

I opened the letter.

“You said she was threatening you.””

“She was.””

“Because of what you did.””

His silence confirmed it.

I looked at him.

“What did you do?””

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“After the accident…”

I waited.

“I moved Vanessa’s car.””

My stomach tightened.

“You helped her hide it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought I was protecting my family.””

I stared at him.

“You were protecting Vanessa.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You need to understand something.””

He looked at me.

“You didn’t just make one mistake.””

I pointed at the letter.

“You built an entire life around that mistake.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

For the first time, I believed him.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because regret didn’t erase damage.

The next morning, I met with my father and Zoe.

We spread everything across the table.

The accident records.

The documents.

The recordings.

The timeline.

And then Zoe noticed something.

“Wait.””

She pointed at a document.

“This date is wrong.””

I looked closer.

“What?””

“The accident happened seven years ago.””

“Yes.””

“But this transfer happened six years ago.””

My father leaned closer.

“That’s impossible.””

Zoe looked at me.

“Vanessa didn’t just cover up the accident.””

“What are you saying?””

“She continued moving money after she supposedly disappeared.””

My stomach dropped.

“She was still operating.””

“Yes.””

My father grabbed another paper.

“This account number…”

“What?””

He looked horrified.

“It belongs to Ethan’s company.””

I turned.

“Ethan?””

Zoe shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed.

“The account was closed.””

“When?””

“The day after Lily’s first birthday.””

I felt something click.

A memory.

Lily’s first birthday.

Vanessa had shown up.

She had brought an expensive gift.

She had hugged Lily.

Everyone had smiled.

I remembered Ethan looking nervous that entire day.

I thought he was stressed from work.

But maybe…

He knew.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Ethan.

*“I need to tell you something before Vanessa does.””*

Another message followed.

*“She’s coming to your house tonight.””*

Then a third.

*“She has proof that I wasn’t the one controlling everything.””*

I stared at the screen.

Zoe frowned.

“What does that mean?””

I didn’t know.

But before I could answer, another message appeared.

This time from Vanessa.

*“Chloe, you finally know enough to hate Ethan.””*

My hands tightened.

Then:

*“But you still don’t know why he stayed.””*

A final message appeared.

*“Ask him about the night he almost lost Lily.””*

I looked up.

Because there was one thing I had never understood.

May you like

Why Ethan had spent seven years afraid.

And now I was about to find out.
