Chapter 19: The Family He Never Told Me About

Ethan didn’t speak.

That was the answer before he even opened his mouth.

I watched his face change.

The fear.

The guilt.

The memory of something buried too deep.

My heart sank.

“How long?””

He looked at me.

“Chloe…”

“How long have you been hiding another family?””

Zoe stepped closer.

“Ethan, answer her.””

He sat down slowly.

“I don’t have another family.””

The relief that almost came was immediately replaced by anger.

“Then why did you look like you were caught?””

He rubbed his hands over his face.

“Because I knew this day would come.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You never told me either.””

Ethan looked at her.

For once, Vanessa wasn’t the person in control.

She was just another person who had been lied to.

“What does that mean?”” she asked.

Ethan took a deep breath.

“Before Chloe, there was someone else.””

My stomach tightened.

“Someone else?””

“Yes.””

“Were you married?””

“No.””

“Did you have a child?””

His silence answered.

I felt like the room tilted.

“Ethan.””

He looked at me.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Do not make me drag this out of you.””

He closed his eyes.

“I had a daughter.””

Nobody spoke.

The words hung in the air.

A daughter.

A child.

A secret.

“How old?””

“She would be nine now.””

I stared at him.

Nine.

A child older than Lily.

A child he had never mentioned.

“Where is she?””

His face broke.

“She died.””

The anger inside me stopped for a moment.

Not disappeared.

Just paused.

“How?””

“She was sick.””

His voice became quiet.

“She was born with a heart condition.””

I looked away.

Because suddenly there was grief mixed with betrayal.

Two emotions I didn’t know how to hold at once.

“What was her name?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Emma.””

The way he said it told me everything.

He had loved her.

He had lost her.

And he had buried the entire part of his life.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked at me.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

“Of who I was before you.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not an excuse.””

“I know.””

“Did Vanessa know?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“And she used it against you.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked stunned.

“You never told me about Emma.””

“I didn’t trust you with it.””

That sentence changed the room.

Because Vanessa, for once, looked hurt.

“You trusted Chloe.””

“Yes.””

“But not me.””

“No.””

Her expression hardened.

“You’re unbelievable.””

Ethan stood.

“No. I’m finally being honest.””

I looked at him.

“Why did you hide Emma from me?””

He sat back down.

“Because after she died, I changed.””

“How?””

“I became someone I hated.””

He looked toward Lily’s room.

“When I met you, I wanted a fresh start.””

I felt tears building.

“A fresh start built on lies.””

“Yes.””

He didn’t fight it.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I was afraid you would see me differently.””

“I do.””

He looked down.

That hurt him.

But it was true.

Before I could say anything else, Zoe’s phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

Then her face changed.

“What?””

She turned the phone toward us.

It was a message.

From the same unknown number.

*You finally know about Emma. Now ask Ethan who was responsible for her death.*

The room went silent.

I looked at Ethan.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked terrified.

“What do you know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“I thought that was over.””

My stomach dropped.

“What was over?””

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“Emma didn’t die because of her illness.””

I felt cold.

“What are you saying?””

Ethan’s face turned pale.

“Vanessa, stop.””

“No.””

She stepped back.

“She deserves the truth.””

My heart pounded.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

“She died the same night you and I made the mistake that ruined everything.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

And I realized something.

The story wasn’t just about Thanksgiving.

It wasn’t just about Lily.

It went back years before I ever entered Ethan’s life.

“Ethan?””

His voice was barely audible.

“I was there.””

My breath caught.

May you like

“Where?””

“The night Emma died.””
