Chapter 11: My Mother’s Confession

I met my mother the next morning at a small café she loved.

The same place she used to take me when I was a teenager.

A place filled with memories.

A place that suddenly felt unfamiliar.

She was already sitting there.

Her hands wrapped around a coffee cup.

When she saw me, her eyes filled with tears.

“Chloe.””

I sat down.

No hug.

No smile.

Just silence.

“You signed the document.””

Her face fell.

“I knew you would start there.””

“Because that’s where the truth begins.””

She looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s what everyone says.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“I deserve that.””

For some reason, that hurt more.

Because she wasn’t defending herself.

She was admitting she had failed me.

“Tell me everything.””

She took a deep breath.

“When you were pregnant with Lily, Ethan came to me.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“He was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Vanessa.””

My mother looked out the window.

“She had control over him. Over his money. Over his business.””

I listened.

But I wasn’t ready to forgive.

“She told Ethan she would destroy him if he didn’t follow her rules.””

“What rules?””

My mother’s voice lowered.

“She wanted him to prove loyalty.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

“She wanted him to sign documents.””

“Like the one you signed?””

My mother nodded.

“I found out after Lily was born.””

“Then why sign it?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Vanessa threatened you.””

The air left my lungs.

“What?””

“She told me if I didn’t cooperate, she would make sure Ethan disappeared from Lily’s life.””

I stared at her.

“You believed her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My mother looked at me.

“Because she had already shown me what she was capable of.””

She reached into her purse.

Then she placed an old envelope on the table.

“I kept this for seven years.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?””

“The original paternity test.””

My heart raced.

“You had it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I didn’t trust Vanessa.””

I slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a medical report.

My eyes moved down the page.

The result was clear.

*Probability of biological fatherhood: 99.99%*

Ethan was Lily’s father.

I felt tears building.

Not because I was surprised.

Because someone had spent years making me doubt everything.

“Who changed the report?””

My mother looked at me.

“Vanessa.””

“How?””

“She had access through a friend at the hospital.””

I shook my head.

“She planned all of this?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My mother hesitated.

Then she said:

“Because Vanessa wanted Ethan to leave you.””

My hands tightened.

“But why?””

My mother looked at me sadly.

“Because she was in love with him.””

The words landed like a punch.

I sat frozen.

“No.””

“Chloe…”

“No.””

I stood.

“That’s impossible.””

My mother’s voice cracked.

“It’s the truth.””

I thought about every look.

Every comment.

Every time Vanessa criticized me.

Every time she acted like I didn’t belong.

It wasn’t just jealousy.

It was obsession.

“She wanted my life.””

My mother nodded.

“She wanted everything.””

My phone buzzed.

A message from Ethan.

I opened it.

*“I know where Vanessa got the original video.””*

Then another message.

*“But Chloe, you need to know something before you watch it.””*

I stared.

The third message appeared.

*“Vanessa didn’t record that night to protect herself.””*

A pause.

Then:

*“She recorded it because she knew she would need it against me one day.””*

I looked at my mother.

“What does that mean?””

Her face changed.

Like she already knew.

“She wasn’t just collecting evidence.””

“Then what was she doing?””

May you like

My mother whispered:

“She was planning her way into your family.””
