Chapter 9: The Room Beneath the House
The address on my phone belonged to our old house.
The house where Lily was born.
The house I had not visited since the accident.
My hands shook as I stared at the screen.
“That’s impossible,” I whispered.
Daniel looked at the location.
His face went pale.
“What?””
“Where is it?””
I looked at him.
“You know exactly where it is.””
His silence answered for him.
I grabbed my keys.
“Emma, wait.””
“No.””
“You can’t go alone.””
I turned around.
“You lost the right to tell me what to do.””
He followed anyway.
The drive felt endless.
Every street brought back fragments.
A driveway.
A tree.
A memory I couldn’t fully hold.
When we arrived, the house looked abandoned.
The paint was peeling.
The garden was overgrown.
But the moment I stepped inside, my body reacted.
A feeling.
A memory.
Something buried.
I touched the wall.
And suddenly I remembered a voice.
Michael.
“You have to trust me, Emma.””
I pulled my hand away.
“What happened here?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
We searched every room.
Nothing.
No Ava.
No evidence.
No explanation.
Then Lily’s old bedroom door creaked open.
I stopped.
This room.
This was where everything began.
The accident.
The missing memories.
The secrets.
I walked inside slowly.
The walls were covered with faded drawings.
One drawing caught my attention.
Two little girls holding hands.
One had yellow hair.
The other had brown hair.
At the bottom, written in a child’s handwriting:
“Me and my sister.””
My heart stopped.
Sister.
I touched the paper.
“Lily drew this?””
Daniel nodded.
“When?””
“After the accident.””
I turned.
“You knew?””
“I thought it was just imagination.””
“No.””
I looked at the drawing.
“She knew.””
A sound came from behind the wall.
A small tapping.
Both of us froze.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Daniel looked toward the closet.
“There’s something there.””
We moved the old shelves.
Behind them was a hidden door.
My heart pounded.
A door inside my daughter’s old bedroom.
A door nobody told me about.
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a small room.
Not a closet.
A hidden room.
And on the floor were toys.
Blankets.
Children’s drawings.
Someone had been living there.
I stepped inside.
Then I saw the photograph.
A picture of Lily and Ava together.
Both smiling.
Both wearing matching bracelets.
Behind the photo was a note.
My hands trembled as I picked it up.
The handwriting was familiar.
Michael’s.
“Emma, if you found this, it means I failed to protect them.””
I stopped breathing.
Daniel read over my shoulder.
The note continued:
“Lily is your daughter. Ava is mine. But Vanessa was right about one thing…”
I swallowed.
The next line was written darker.
“She was never the danger.””
I looked at Daniel.
The room felt colder.
Because for the first time, I understood.
Maybe Vanessa wasn’t the monster in this story.
Maybe she was just another person trying to survive.
Then footsteps sounded upstairs.
Someone was in the house.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Emma.””
A shadow moved across the doorway.
A man’s voice echoed through the empty hallway.
“You finally found the room.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It was the same voice from the phone.
Michael.
May you like
And he said:
“I’m sorry you had to learn the truth this way.””
