Chapter 13: The Secret My Mother Buried

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

I stared at the frozen screen, waiting for someone to tell me it was wrong.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

A video edited out of context.

Anything.

But nobody spoke.

Not Daniel.

Not Michael.

Not Vanessa.

Not even my mother.

Margaret sat in the chair across from me, her face pale.

The same face that had comforted me after my accident.

The same hands that had held Lily when she was born.

The same woman who had walked into my house and defended my daughter.

I wanted to believe she was innocent.

I needed to.

“Mom,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

And the sadness in her eyes scared me more than anger would have.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice broke.

“Don’t say my name like everything is okay.””

She lowered her head.

“I was going to tell you.””

I laughed quietly.

Everyone always said that.

I was going to tell you.

After years of silence.

After years of lies.

“Tell me what?””

The room was silent.

Officer Harris looked between us.

“Mrs. Margaret, we need answers.””

My mother nodded slowly.

“I know.””

She looked at Lily and Ava.

Then she looked at me.

“Everything started the night of the accident.””

I felt my chest tighten.

The accident.

The missing memory.

The event everyone kept using to explain why I didn’t know the truth.

“What happened?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“You found out Michael was alive.””

I stared.

“I already know that.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t know what you found out.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Margaret.””

My mother looked at him.

“You should have told her.””

Michael looked away.

“You’re right.””

I felt my anger rising.

“How many people knew?””

Nobody answered.

“How many?””

Daniel looked down.

Vanessa looked away.

Michael closed his eyes.

My mother whispered:

“Everyone.””

The word cut deeper than anything else.

Everyone.

My whole life had become a room full of people whispering behind my back.

“What did I discover?”” I asked.

My mother took a shaky breath.

“You discovered that Lily and Ava were connected.””

I frowned.

“They’re sisters.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Not just sisters.””

The room went quiet.

My mother continued.

“When you were pregnant with Lily, you found records showing someone had changed Ava’s birth information.””

I looked at the girls.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Ava was never supposed to disappear.””

Michael stepped forward.

“She was taken.””

My mother nodded.

“And Emma found proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“That Vanessa wasn’t the person responsible.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked stunned.

My mother continued.

“The person who changed the records was someone close to us.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Everyone already knew.

My eyes moved toward Daniel.

Then toward Vanessa.

Then back to my mother.

“No.””

My mother looked at me.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I stood.

“You all knew something happened.””

My voice shook.

“But nobody told me.””

My mother cried silently.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I felt something inside me break.

“Everyone says that.””

I looked around the room.

“Everyone.””

Officer Harris stepped closer.

“Mrs. Carter, we need the full story.””

My mother nodded.

“When Emma discovered the truth, someone tried to silence her.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Michael’s face changed.

“Margaret…”

She looked at him.

“She deserves to know.””

Then she turned to me.

“The accident wasn’t an accident.””

The room went completely silent.

My hands went cold.

“What did you say?””

My mother looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“Someone caused the crash.””

I couldn’t speak.

Four years.

Four years believing my memory disappeared because of a tragic moment.

But someone had taken it from me.

“Who?””

My mother looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

Officer Harris frowned.

“You don’t know?””

“I saw the aftermath. I saw the car. I saw Emma unconscious.””

She wiped her tears.

“But before I arrived…”

She stopped.

“Before you arrived?”” I asked.

My mother looked at me.

“Daniel was already there.””

The room froze.

Daniel immediately stood.

“That’s not what happened.””

My eyes moved to him.

“You were there?””

He looked trapped.

“Emma, listen.””

“No.””

I stepped away.

“You were there before my mother?””

Daniel said nothing.

And that silence was the answer.

Then Officer Harris received a phone notification.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I asked.

He slowly looked up.

“We found the original accident report.””

My heart pounded.

“What does it say?””

He turned the screen around.

A new name appeared.

A name none of us expected.

The person who reported the crash.

The person who called emergency services.

May you like

The person who was there first.

Daniel Carter.
