Chapter 12: The Woman Behind the Lies

The police arrived before sunrise.

Ava was taken to a safe room with a social worker.

Lily was brought back from my mother’s house.

When the two girls saw each other, something happened that broke my heart.

They ran toward each other.

Like they had been separated for years.

Like they already knew they belonged together.

Lily held Ava’s hand.

“Are you my sister?””

Ava nodded.

“Yes.””

Lily smiled.

“Mommy said I didn’t have a sister.””

I looked away.

Because I had never said that.

I had only been kept from knowing.

Officer Harris gathered everyone in the living room.

Vanessa was brought in from custody.

Daniel sat silently.

Michael stood near Ava.

For the first time, all the people who had hidden pieces of my life were in one room.

Officer Harris placed documents on the table.

“We have enough evidence to understand parts of what happened.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Parts?””

He nodded.

“There are still missing pieces.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Of course there are.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked exhausted.

Not dangerous.

Just broken.

“I told you the truth,” she said.

I stared at her.

“You lied too.””

“Yes.””

Her answer surprised me.

“I lied about many things.””

She looked at Ava.

“But not about loving my daughter.””

Ava looked down.

Vanessa started crying.

“I thought if I made everyone hate Lily, someone would finally tell me where Ava was.””

My heart hurt.

“You hurt an innocent child.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I hate myself for that.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Officer Harris turned to Daniel.

“Mr. Carter.””

Daniel looked up.

“Yes.””

“Why did you hide Ava?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The answer came quietly.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing Emma.””

I felt nothing.

Not sympathy.

Not anger.

Just exhaustion.

He continued.

“When I found Ava, I realized Michael was alive. I knew everything would fall apart.””

Michael stepped forward.

“You chose yourself.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I chose Emma.””

“No.””

Michael shook his head.

“You chose control.””

That word stayed in the air.

Because it was true.

Daniel wanted to control the story.

Control what I knew.

Control what I felt.

He wasn’t protecting me.

He was protecting the life he built.

Officer Harris opened another folder.

“There is one more thing.””

Everyone looked.

“The cameras in the house were not only recording Vanessa.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

He pulled out a report.

“They were recording conversations between Daniel and another person.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Wait.””

Officer Harris continued.

“We found deleted footage.””

My heart raced.

“Who was he talking to?””

The officer looked at me.

“Someone connected to the accident.””

Silence.

“Someone who knew your memory would be damaged.””

I felt cold.

“Who?””

Officer Harris turned the laptop around.

The screen showed a frozen image from the video.

A woman sitting across from Daniel.

A woman I recognized.

A woman who had hugged me after my accident.

A woman who had cried with me when I lost my memories.

My mother.

Margaret.

I stopped breathing.

“No.””

Officer Harris pressed play.

My mother’s voice filled the room.

“Daniel, if Emma remembers everything, we all lose.””

May you like

The screen went black.

And my entire world collapsed.
