Chapter 17: The Husband Who Controlled the Story
Nobody moved after Daniel’s name appeared.
Not even Daniel.
He stared at the document like it was something impossible.
Like someone else had written his name.
“That’s not mine.””
Officer Harris looked at him.
“The signature matches your records.””
“No.””
Daniel stepped backward.
“I didn’t do this.””
I watched him carefully.
Because once upon a time, I would have believed him instantly.
But now?
Now I knew how many times a person could say they were protecting you while destroying your life.
“Daniel,” I said quietly.
He looked at me.
“I swear to you.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
Those words hurt him.
I could see it.
But they were true.
Michael looked furious.
“You’ve been manipulating everyone.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“You don’t know anything.””
“I know you took Ava.””
“I saved her.””
“You hid her.””
“Because you failed her.””
The argument exploded.
But I wasn’t listening.
I was looking at Lily.
My little girl.
The child who had been standing on a stool while adults around her played games with the truth.
I walked over and knelt beside her.
“Mommy?””
I forced a smile.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
Then she asked the question that broke me.
“Are all the grown-ups fighting because of me?””
My eyes filled with tears.
“No, sweetheart.””
I held her hand.
“This is not because of you.””
She looked at Ava.
“Can she stay with us?””
I looked at Ava.
The little girl who had lost so much.
“Yes.””
I kissed Lily’s forehead.
“She can.””
Behind me, Officer Harris continued questioning Daniel.
“Why were the cameras installed?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Mr. Carter.””
Finally, Daniel whispered:
“Because I knew someone was coming.””
Everyone turned.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“I knew the past was going to come back.””
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
He looked toward Michael.
“He contacted me.””
Michael frowned.
“When?””
“Before the accident.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did Michael tell you?””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“He told me if anything happened to him, I needed to protect Emma and Lily.””
Michael stared.
“I never said that.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You did.””
“No.””
Again.
Another contradiction.
Another missing piece.
Officer Harris stepped between them.
“Someone is lying.””
Rachel suddenly spoke.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“Someone is changing the story.””
She walked toward the table.
“Look at the timeline.””
She pointed at the documents.
“The accident happened four years ago.””
“Yes,” Officer Harris said.
“But the first camera was installed six months later.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“It means he wasn’t preparing for the accident.””
She turned toward me.
“He was preparing for something after.””
My heart sank.
“After what?””
Daniel looked away.
And that was when I knew.
He knew.
“What happened after the accident?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Emma remembered.””
I froze.
“What?””
“You remembered everything.””
The room went silent.
“I don’t understand.””
Daniel looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“You lost your memory after the second injury.””
My blood ran cold.
“Second?””
“Yes.””
“There was another?””
He nodded.
“You woke up.””
My breathing stopped.
“You woke up for three days.””
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel looked broken.
“You remembered who caused the accident.””
I stepped backward.
“Who?””
He looked at Margaret.
Then Michael.
Then finally at me.
“You remembered the person standing beside the car.””
My voice barely worked.
“Who was it?””
Daniel whispered:
“It was someone you trusted.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
Officer Harris answered.
His face changed.
Then he looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter…”
“What?””
“We found the original hospital security footage.””
My heart pounded.
“What does it show?””
He swallowed.
“The person who visited you after the accident.””
May you like
I waited.
“Was your daughter’s doctor.””
