Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Everything
I showed the picture to Officer Harris before I showed anyone else.
Because I finally understood something.
This was bigger than a family argument.
Bigger than Vanessa.
Bigger than Daniel’s lies.
Someone was watching us.
And they were getting closer.
Officer Harris studied the photo carefully.
“Do you recognize this location?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He zoomed in.
The picture showed Lily sleeping on my mother’s couch.
The angle was strange.
Like someone had taken it from across the room.
But my mother’s house had been locked.
The windows were closed.
The doors were secured.
“How did they get inside?”” I whispered.
Officer Harris looked serious.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
I returned home that afternoon with one question burning inside me.
Who was Vanessa protecting?
When I entered my house, Daniel was waiting.
“You talked to Michael.””
It wasn’t a question.
I stopped.
“How do you know?””
“Because he called me.””
My eyes narrowed.
“When?””
“Before he called you.””
I stared at him.
“You talked to him?””
“Yes.””
“And you still didn’t tell me he was alive?””
Daniel looked away.
“I didn’t know how.””
I stepped closer.
“You had years.””
He had no answer.
Then he said:
“Michael isn’t the victim you think he is.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You keep saying that, but somehow everyone around me knows the truth except me.””
Daniel’s face softened.
“Emma, listen to me.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m done listening. I want facts.””
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this in Vanessa’s room.””
I didn’t take it immediately.
“What is it?””
“Something she kept hidden.””
Inside was a photograph.
A hospital photograph.
A newborn baby.
Lily.
My hands shook.
On the back of the photo was a handwritten note.
“Subject confirmed. The Carter family must never know.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What is this?””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
But I couldn’t tell anymore.
Everyone had a version of the truth.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone except Lily.
She was the only innocent person in all of this.
That evening, I went to Vanessa’s old room.
The police had searched the house, but they hadn’t found everything.
People who hide things always leave something behind.
I opened drawers.
Moved clothes.
Checked shelves.
Then I found a small locked box under the bed.
Inside were documents.
Old hospital records.
Letters.
And a birth certificate.
Not Lily’s.
Another child’s.
I stared at the name.
My hands went numb.
Because I knew that name.
It belonged to Vanessa’s daughter.
A daughter she always claimed had died years ago.
But the records showed something impossible.
Her daughter had not died.
She had been alive.
And she had been connected to Lily from the beginning.
I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Daniel was standing in the doorway.
His face was pale.
“You found it.””
I held up the document.
“What is this?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
Finally, he whispered:
“Vanessa wasn’t just hiding Lily’s father.””
I waited.
“She was hiding who Lily really was.””
My heart pounded.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at the papers in my hand.
Then at me.
And said the one sentence I never expected:
“Emma, Lily wasn’t the baby Vanessa wanted to hurt.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“Then who was?””
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
Toward Lily’s bedroom.
May you like
And whispered:
“Her own daughter.””
