Chapter 19: The Final Lie
Nobody moved.
Dr. Adrian Wells stood in the doorway like he belonged there.
Like he hadn’t spent years hiding behind a white coat and a hospital badge.
Like he wasn’t the reason my entire life had become a maze of secrets.
Officer Harris immediately stepped forward.
“Dr. Wells, don’t move.””
The doctor smiled slightly.
“I’m not here to run.””
Michael stared at him.
“You should have run.””
Dr. Wells looked amused.
“You still think this is about punishment.””
I held Lily closer.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“This is about the truth.””
For the first time, Dr. Wells looked directly at me.
And I saw something terrifying.
He wasn’t afraid.
He believed he was right.
“You finally remembered.””
My voice was cold.
“You erased my memories.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
The answer shocked me.
“No?””
“I didn’t erase them.””
He stepped into the room.
“I protected you from them.””
I felt anger rise.
“You drugged me.””
“I saved your life.””
“You made me forget my daughter’s history.””
“I made you forget a nightmare.””
I stared at him.
“How can you stand there and say that?””
Dr. Wells looked at Lily.
“Because if you remembered everything that night, she would not be alive.””
The room went silent.
I looked at my daughter.
Then back at him.
“Explain.””
He placed the folder on the table.
“The night Lily was born, there was a mistake.””
Rachel’s face changed.
“No.””
Dr. Wells looked at her.
“Yes.””
He opened the folder.
“Two babies were connected to a criminal investigation.””
Michael frowned.
“What investigation?””
Dr. Wells looked at him.
“The organization you were investigating.””
Michael went quiet.
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
He nodded slowly.
“I was trying to expose them.””
Dr. Wells continued.
“But your investigation put everyone at risk.””
He pointed toward the documents.
“One of the babies became evidence.””
My hands tightened around Lily.
“Evidence of what?””
Dr. Wells looked at me.
“Fraud. Medical corruption. Illegal adoptions.””
The room went still.
My daughter.
Ava.
Two innocent children caught in something they never chose.
“Why change the records?””
Dr. Wells sighed.
“Because people were coming for them.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“And you decided who got protected?””
Dr. Wells looked at her.
“I made a decision.””
“You stole my daughter.””
“I saved her.””
“You hid her.””
“I kept her alive.””
The argument cut through the room.
But I wasn’t listening anymore.
I was remembering.
The hospital.
The night everything changed.
The moment I saw something I wasn’t supposed to see.
Dr. Wells standing with another person.
A person whose face was hidden.
A person handing him a file.
I grabbed my head.
Another memory.
A voice.
“Make sure Emma forgets.””
My eyes opened.
I looked at Dr. Wells.
“You weren’t alone.””
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“Who was with you?””
Nobody spoke.
I looked around.
Then my eyes stopped.
Daniel.
He looked devastated.
Not surprised.
I felt my heart sink.
“Daniel.””
He closed his eyes.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice broke.
“You knew.””
Daniel whispered:
“I knew part of it.””
Everyone stared at him.
“How?””
He looked at me.
“Because after the accident, Dr. Wells contacted me.””
“Why?””
“He said you were remembering things that could put Lily in danger.””
“And you believed him?””
Daniel looked down.
“At first.””
The room was silent.
“Then I realized he was manipulating everyone.””
I felt tears in my eyes.
“You still stayed.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Because I was afraid.””
The answer hurt.
Fear had controlled every person in my life.
Fear had become an excuse for every betrayal.
Dr. Wells suddenly laughed softly.
“You all blame each other.””
Everyone turned.
“But none of you understand.””
Officer Harris stepped closer.
“Understand what?””
Dr. Wells looked at Lily.
“The truth about her.””
My body went cold.
“What about her?””
He opened the final page.
“This is why everyone fought to hide the records.””
I looked at the paper.
DNA results.
Medical analysis.
A conclusion.
I read the first line.
Then the second.
Then I stopped.
Because it explained everything.
Why Vanessa was obsessed.
Why Michael disappeared.
Why Daniel lied.
Why my mother panicked.
Why Dr. Wells destroyed records.
Lily wasn’t just connected to the investigation.
She was the evidence.
My daughter carried the truth inside her.
I looked up.
“You used my child.””
Dr. Wells shook his head.
“No.””
He smiled.
“She was the only person who could expose them.””
The room went silent.
Then Officer Harris pulled out his handcuffs.
“Dr. Wells, you’re under arrest.””
For the first time, the doctor’s confidence disappeared.
But before they took him away, he looked at me.
“You think this is over?””
I stared at him.
“Yes.””
He smiled sadly.
“No.””
May you like
Then he said the words that froze my blood.
“Because you still don’t know who Lily’s biological father is.””
