Chapter 10: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
I turned around slowly.
For years, I had imagined what I would say if Michael ever came back.
I imagined anger.
I imagined questions.
I imagined myself demanding answers for every night I cried over a man I thought I had lost forever.
But when I finally saw him standing there, older and thinner than I remembered, all I felt was confusion.
Because my heart recognized him before my mind did.
His eyes.
His voice.
The way he looked at me like he was carrying years of regret.
“Emma,” he whispered.
Daniel stepped in front of me.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Michael looked at him.
“You knew this day would come.””
“You disappeared.””
“I was trying to keep them alive.””
I looked between them.
“Stop.””
Both men turned toward me.
I was tired of being the only person in the room who didn’t know the truth.
“No more secrets,” I said.
My voice shook.
“No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle. I want the truth now.””
Michael lowered his eyes.
“You deserve that.””
“Yes, I do.””
He slowly walked into the room.
I noticed he looked at everything.
The drawings.
The toys.
The hidden space.
Like he was seeing pieces of a life he had lost.
“Lily and Ava were here,” he said.
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
Michael looked at me.
“Because Vanessa and I made a mistake.””
I stared.
“Your daughter was hidden in this room.””
His expression changed.
“Not because we wanted to hide her from you.””
“Then why?””
“Because someone was looking for her.””
“Who?””
Michael hesitated.
And that hesitation made me angry.
“Michael.””
He took a breath.
“Someone who wanted to use Ava to get to me.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And what does Lily have to do with any of this?””
Michael’s face softened.
“Everything.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Explain.””
He looked at the drawing on the wall.
“When Lily was born, there was an accident.””
I closed my eyes.
The word again.
The accident.
The missing piece of my life.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Michael looked at me.
“You found out Vanessa’s baby was alive.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Ava wasn’t supposed to be gone. Vanessa’s doctors lied. Someone changed records.””
“Who?””
Michael’s expression darkened.
“Daniel’s stepmother.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Vanessa was trying to expose them.””
“Why?””
“Because Ava was taken from her.””
I remembered Vanessa’s face.
Her anger.
Her pain.
Her obsession with Lily.
“She blamed me.””
Michael nodded.
“She thought Lily was connected to the people who took Ava.””
“But Lily was just a baby.””
“I know.””
His voice broke.
“And that’s why I tried to fix it.””
I looked at him.
“Where were you?””
Michael looked down.
“Trying to find Ava.””
“Four years?””
“Yes.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I thought keeping you away from me would keep you alive.””
“Do you know what that did to me?””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“I buried you.””
Michael looked like my words physically hurt him.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel suddenly spoke.
“You should tell her the rest.””
Michael looked at him.
“You’re the one who kept the cameras.””
The room went silent.
I turned toward Daniel.
“What?””
Michael looked at me.
“Daniel wasn’t just investigating.””
My stomach dropped.
“What are you saying?””
Michael looked directly at my husband.
“Tell her.””
Daniel said nothing.
“Daniel.””
Finally, he whispered:
“I knew Michael was alive.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
“How long?””
“Four years.””
The answer broke something inside me.
“Four years?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Stop saying that.””
My voice echoed through the room.
“You don’t protect someone by stealing their choices.””
Daniel looked away.
Michael reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this before I disappeared.””
He handed it to me.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was mine.
My own handwriting.
But I didn’t remember writing it.
The first sentence made my hands freeze.
“Dear Emma, if I forget everything, I need you to trust this letter.””
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Michael’s face was filled with sadness.
“It’s the memory you lost.””
I unfolded the page.
And as I read the first line, a sudden image flashed in my mind.
A hospital room.
A crying baby.
Vanessa screaming.
May you like
And my own voice saying:
“Someone is trying to take my daughter.””
