Chapter 3: The Secret My Husband Buried
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I heard Daniel’s voice from the recording.
“She can never know what happened before Lily was born.””
Before Lily was born.
Those words followed me everywhere.
By morning, I had convinced myself there had to be an explanation.
A misunderstanding.
A conversation taken out of context.
Anything.
Because the alternative was too painful.
The man I married had spent years building a life with me while hiding something enormous.
My mother found me sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee I hadn’t touched.
“You need to tell me what you know,” Margaret said.
I looked at her.
“I don’t know anything.””
“That’s the problem.””
She sat across from me.
“Emma, your husband looked terrified when they found those cameras.””
I stared at the floor.
“He said Vanessa was just helping.””
My mother shook her head.
“People who have nothing to hide don’t beg police officers not to look at evidence.””
She was right.
I hated that she was right.
Later that morning, Officer Harris returned.
He placed a folder on the table.
“We reviewed the footage.””
My hands went cold.
“What did you find?””
He opened the folder.
“There are recordings from the past six months.””
Six months.
I felt sick.
“Six months?””
“Yes.””
My mother grabbed my hand.
“What was on them?””
Officer Harris looked at me carefully.
“The cameras were not installed recently.””
“Then when?””
“Daniel installed them.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the air had disappeared.
“No,” I whispered.
Officer Harris nodded.
“We found purchase records connected to his account.””
My mind raced.
Why would my husband install cameras in our home?
Why would he secretly record us?
“I don’t understand.””
Officer Harris opened his notebook.
“Mrs. Carter, your husband wasn’t just recording Vanessa.””
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
“He was recording you.””
I stood up so quickly my chair fell backward.
“That’s impossible.””
“He placed cameras where he could monitor conversations.””
My mother’s face turned pale.
“Why?””
Officer Harris hesitated.
“Because he was looking for something.””
The room felt smaller.
“What something?””
Before he could answer, my phone rang.
It was Daniel.
I stared at the screen.
My mother whispered, “Don’t answer.””
But I did.
“Emma,” Daniel said immediately.
His voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Scared.
“Where are you?””
“Why?””
“Because we need to talk.””
“You mean you need to explain.””
Silence.
Then he said:
“I can explain everything.””
I laughed quietly.
“Can you explain why you filmed our home?””
“Emma…”
“Can you explain why you watched Lily suffer?””
His breathing changed.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
I closed my eyes.
That sentence told me he still wasn’t taking responsibility.
“What did you want to happen, Daniel?””
Another silence.
Then:
“I wanted to find out if Vanessa was telling the truth.””
I froze.
“What truth?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
“Emma, please. You need to understand something about Lily.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What about Lily?””
His voice dropped.
“The reason Vanessa hated her…”
I waited.
“The reason everything started…”
I felt my heart pounding.
“Daniel, tell me.””
But he said something that made every piece of my life suddenly feel like a lie.
“Lily isn’t the child you think she is.””
The call ended.
I stood completely still.
My mother looked at me.
“What did he say?””
I couldn’t speak.
Because upstairs, my little girl was sleeping peacefully.
The same little girl who called me Mommy.
The same little girl who cried when someone hurt her.
And now my husband was telling me she was a secret.
A secret he had hidden for four years.
Then my phone buzzed again.
This time, it wasn’t Daniel.
It was a message from an unknown number.
One sentence.
May you like
One warning.
“Ask your husband who Lily’s real father is.””
