Chapter 15: The Woman From the Past
The photo stayed on my phone.
A woman standing outside my house.
A file in her hand.
A stranger who somehow knew every secret my family had spent years hiding.
I looked at Vanessa.
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
“Who is she?”” I asked.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her lips trembled.
“I don’t know.””
Nobody believed her.
Not even Vanessa.
Because the fear in her face said something else.
She knew.
Officer Harris took the phone.
“We need to find her.””
But before anyone could move, the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
The woman from the picture stood there.
She looked older than the photo.
Tired.
Like someone who had spent years carrying something heavy.
“I can save you the trouble,” she said.
Officer Harris immediately stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at Vanessa.
Then at Ava.
“My name is Rachel.””
Ava stared at her.
Something about her expression changed.
A memory.
A feeling.
“Mommy?””
The word was barely a whisper.
The room froze.
Vanessa stood up.
“No.””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
Ava stepped closer.
“I know you.””
Rachel covered her mouth.
“You remember me?””
Ava nodded slowly.
“You sang to me.””
Vanessa looked like the ground had disappeared beneath her.
“No.””
Rachel looked at her.
“You took my daughter.””
The accusation hit the room.
I looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Rachel turned toward me.
“Your family has been lying to you because the truth would destroy all of them.””
I felt exhausted.
“Everyone says that.””
Rachel looked at Lily.
“Your daughter was never the reason Ava disappeared.””
“Then what was?””
Rachel held up the file.
“This.””
She placed it on the table.
Inside were medical records.
Court documents.
DNA reports.
I looked at Officer Harris.
He nodded.
“These need to be verified.””
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
“You changed everything.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I was trying to save her.””
“No.””
Rachel’s voice broke.
“You were trying to keep her.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Tell me the truth.””
She covered her face.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at Ava.
“Of losing her again.””
Rachel shook her head.
“You never had the right to take her.””
Vanessa cried.
“I gave birth to her.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“And I raised her.””
I looked at Ava.
My heart hurt.
Because the little girl standing there had two women who loved her.
And both women had been hurt by the same secret.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Rachel opened the file.
“Years ago, there was a medical error.””
She looked at Lily.
“Two babies were connected to the same case.””
My stomach tightened.
“What case?””
“The hospital investigation after the accident.””
I felt cold.
“The accident?””
Rachel nodded.
“That was when everything started.””
She pulled out a document.
“The hospital discovered someone had altered records.””
Officer Harris looked at it.
“This is serious.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Emma, Lily and Ava were never random.””
I held my breath.
“What do you mean?””
Rachel pointed to the DNA report.
“Their connection was the reason someone wanted the truth buried.””
My eyes moved to the paper.
Then to Lily.
Then to Ava.
“What connection?””
Rachel looked directly at me.
And said:
“Those two girls are the only witnesses to what happened that night.””
My heart stopped.
“They were babies.””
Rachel nodded.
“But their DNA tells a story.””
The room went silent.
Then Officer Harris looked at the final page.
His expression changed.
“Everyone needs to see this.””
I took the paper.
And the first line made my hands go numb.
Because it revealed the person who had been behind everything.
The person who caused the accident.
The person who erased my memories.
May you like
And the person none of us suspected.
My own family.
