Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the DNA Report
The message stayed on my phone screen for almost an hour.
“Ask your husband who Lily’s real father is.””
I read it again and again until the words stopped looking like letters and started feeling like a threat.
Someone knew.
Someone had been waiting for me to discover the truth.
I walked upstairs and watched Lily sleep.
Her tiny hand was wrapped around her stuffed rabbit. Her hair was messy across her pillow, and there was a small bandage near her temple from what Vanessa had done.
She looked peaceful.
She looked like my daughter.
Because she was my daughter.
No test.
No secret.
No hidden conversation could change that.
But the question remained.
Why had Daniel said those words?
Why had he looked terrified when he talked about Lily?
The next morning, I drove to Daniel’s office.
I didn’t call first.
I didn’t warn him.
I needed to see his face when I asked the question.
His assistant looked surprised when I walked in.
“Mrs. Carter? Is everything okay?””
“No,” I said.
The truth was finally coming out, and I was done pretending everything was fine.
Daniel was sitting behind his desk when I entered.
He looked exhausted.
Like he hadn’t slept either.
“Emma.””
I closed the door behind me.
“Who is Lily’s real father?””
His face immediately changed.
Not confusion.
Not shock.
Fear.
I noticed every tiny reaction.
The way his fingers tightened around his pen.
The way he looked toward the window.
The way he avoided my eyes.
“Who told you that?”” he asked.
I laughed softly.
“That’s your first question?””
“Emma—”
“No. Answer me.””
He stood up.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
He walked around the desk.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
He stopped.
I smiled bitterly.
“After another four years? After Lily grew up believing everyone was lying to her?””
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
My voice cracked.
“Daniel, my daughter was being hurt in our home while you secretly recorded us. Don’t talk to me about fair.””
He looked down.
For a moment, I thought he might finally confess.
Instead, he said:
“I need you to hear the whole story.””
“Then tell it.””
He took a deep breath.
“Before we met, you had a life I didn’t know about.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“You were pregnant when we first started dating.””
My entire body went still.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me sadly.
“Yes.””
The room spun.
I remembered.
The hospital.
The accident.
The weeks after.
The confusion.
The doctors telling me I had lost parts of my memory from the trauma.
But I remembered Lily.
I remembered carrying her.
I remembered giving birth.
“How could I not know?””
“Because you didn’t remember everything.””
I stared at him.
“And you did?””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt more than I expected.
“You knew?””
“I found out after we got married.””
“How?””
Daniel walked back to his desk and pulled out a folder.
He placed it in front of me.
Inside was a DNA test.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The name at the top made my stomach drop.
Lily Carter.
The date was from two years earlier.
“Why did you do this?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Because Vanessa told me something.””
Of course.
Vanessa.
“What did she say?””
He hesitated.
“She said Lily wasn’t mine.””
I stared at him.
“And you believed her?””
“I didn’t know what to believe.””
“So you secretly tested my daughter?””
“Our daughter.””
“Don’t.””
The word came out sharper than I intended.
Because suddenly I understood.
Daniel had spent years carrying a secret.
But instead of trusting me, he investigated me.
He watched me.
He watched Lily.
He let Vanessa stay near my child.
“You knew she was hurting Lily,” I whispered.
His silence was enough.
My eyes filled with tears.
“You knew.””
“I thought I could prove Vanessa wrong.””
“By doing nothing?””
“I was trying to understand what was happening.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Daniel looked broken.
But I couldn’t feel sorry for him.
Not yet.
“Where is the test result?””
He pointed at the folder.
I looked down.
The result wasn’t what I expected.
The DNA report showed Daniel was not Lily’s biological father.
But the next line made me stop breathing.
Because the biological father’s name wasn’t blank.
It wasn’t unknown.
It was someone I knew.
Someone who had been in our lives for years.
My hands started shaking.
“Who is this?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
May you like
And when he answered, his voice was barely a whisper.
“Your first husband.””
