Chapter 5: The Man Who Came Back From the Dead
I didn’t move.
I couldn’t.
The name on the paper felt impossible.
A name from a life I barely remembered.
A name everyone told me belonged to the past.
“Your first husband,” Daniel repeated.
The room suddenly felt too small.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Emma—”
“No.””
I pushed the folder away.
“He died.””
The word came out quietly.
But it carried four years of grief.
Four years of questions I never asked because I thought I already knew the answers.
My first husband, Michael, had been gone before Daniel entered my life.
That was the story everyone told me.
A tragic accident.
A closed chapter.
A painful memory.
Except now, that memory was standing in front of me.
On a piece of paper.
“Where is he?”” I asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Where is Michael?””
His silence was terrifying.
“Daniel.””
“He’s alive.””
My knees almost gave out.
I grabbed the edge of the desk.
“No.””
“I found out three years ago.””
Three years.
Another secret.
Three years of marriage.
Three years of raising Lily.
Three years of Daniel knowing something I didn’t.
“You knew my husband was alive?””
“I knew someone claiming to be Michael was alive.””
“Claiming?””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s why I started investigating.””
I stared at him.
“You’re telling me all of this started because Michael came back?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes filled with guilt.
“Because you were finally happy.””
I laughed.
It wasn’t because anything was funny.
It was because I couldn’t believe him.
“You don’t get to decide what truth I can handle.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
He looked at the floor.
“That you would remember.””
The room became silent.
Remember.
That word followed me everywhere.
The doctors had told me my memory loss after the accident might improve.
But years passed.
Some memories returned in pieces.
A song.
A smell.
A place.
But not Michael.
Not the months before Lily was born.
Not the accident.
Nothing.
“Why would Michael hide?”” I asked.
Daniel sat down slowly.
“Because he wasn’t the man you thought he was.””
I looked at him.
“Explain.””
Before he could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered immediately.
“Who is this?””
A man’s voice responded.
“Emma.””
My blood froze.
I knew that voice.
I didn’t know how.
But some part of me recognized it.
“Michael?””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
I covered my mouth.
Daniel stood.
“Don’t listen to him.””
I ignored Daniel.
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere I should have returned from years ago.””
My heart pounded.
“Why did you leave?””
The line was quiet.
Then Michael said:
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
I almost dropped the phone.
“Protect me from what?””
A pause.
Then his answer changed everything.
“From Vanessa.””
I looked at Daniel.
His face had gone pale.
“What does Vanessa have to do with this?””
Michael’s voice became urgent.
“She knows the truth about Lily.””
My grip tightened.
“What truth?””
“Emma, you need to get away from Daniel.””
I felt anger rising.
“Why?””
“Because he’s been lying to you.””
I looked at my husband.
The man who hid cameras.
The man who hid DNA tests.
The man who knew Michael was alive.
“Daniel told me you were dead.””
Michael went silent.
Then he whispered:
“I know.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
“It means…”
The call suddenly cut out.
I stared at the phone.
Then a message appeared.
A photo.
I opened it.
It was a picture of Lily.
Taken yesterday.
While she was sleeping at my mother’s house.

Underneath it were four words.
“You’re still not safe.””
