Chapter 6: The Brother’s Hidden Sin
The question hit me harder than the slap.
“What?””
Mark smiled.
A cruel, confident smile.
Daniel went completely still.
And that terrified me.
Because Daniel always had an answer.
Always.
But now he looked like someone who had just been exposed.
“Daniel?””
My brother closed his eyes.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I stepped away.
“Not another secret.””
The parking lot blurred around me.
I felt like I was drowning.
Everyone had pieces of my life except me.
My husband.
My brother.
This stranger.
Everyone knew the truth.
Except the person who lived it.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“There are things you don’t understand.””
I shook my head.
“Then explain.””
Mark crossed his arms.
“Go ahead.””
Daniel looked at him with hatred.
“You planned this.””
Mark smiled.
“You always did underestimate me.””
Claire looked between them.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“Three years ago, before I disappeared…”
He stopped.
His voice broke slightly.
“I found evidence against Mark.””
I listened.
“I confronted him.””
Mark laughed.
“You threatened me.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“I warned you.””
The two men stared at each other.
Daniel continued.
“He knew I had proof.””
My heart pounded.
“Proof of what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Proof that he had been manipulating you.””
A tear slipped down my face.
I hated that I still wanted to believe him.
“Then why did you leave?””
Silence.
A long, painful silence.
Then Daniel said:
“Because I thought I had killed someone.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
Mark looked satisfied.
“There it is.””
Daniel looked at the ground.
“After I confronted Mark, I followed him.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought he was going after you.””
My chest tightened.
“What happened?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I found him near our parents’ old property.””
The words felt impossible.
“Our parents’ property?””
He nodded.
“He was searching for documents.””
Mark interrupted.
“Because your brother knew exactly where they were.””
Daniel ignored him.
“I tried to stop him.””
His hands clenched.
“We fought.””
“And?””
Daniel looked at me.
“There was an explosion.””
Nobody spoke.
“The building caught fire.””
My hand covered my mouth.
“I thought…”
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“I thought Mark died.””
I looked at Mark.
But he was standing right there.
Alive.
Smiling.
“That’s the story he never wanted you to hear.””
Mark stepped closer.
“Your brother left me to die.””
Daniel’s eyes flashed.
“You survived because you started the fire.””
The smile disappeared.
For one second.
Just one.
Then Mark recovered.
“You have no proof.””
Claire suddenly spoke.
“I do.””
Everyone turned.
She reached into her bag and pulled out a small recorder.
“I saved this.””
Mark’s face changed.
“What is that?””
Claire pressed play.
Static filled the air.
Then a voice.
A familiar voice.
Mark’s voice.
“If anything happens tonight, blame Daniel.””
My entire body went numb.
The recording continued.
“You know what to say. You know what to tell the police.””
Daniel looked shocked.
Claire stopped the recording.
“I found it hidden in your father’s old office.””
Mark stared at her.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
The threat in his voice made everyone freeze.
Then Mark turned to me.
And somehow, that hurt more than anything.
Because beneath all the anger and fear, I saw something else.
Desperation.
“Emily,” he said softly.
I stepped back.
“No.””
“Listen to me.””
“I listened to you for three years.””
My voice trembled.
“I believed you when you said everyone abandoned me.””
Mark’s expression hardened.
“I was trying to save you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to own me.””
A sudden sound interrupted us.
A police siren.
Growing louder.
Mark looked toward the entrance.
His face changed.
He knew someone had called them.
But before the officers arrived, he leaned closer and whispered:
“You still don’t know the worst part.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He smiled faintly.
“The baby you’re carrying…”
My blood ran cold.
“What about my baby?””
Mark looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
May you like
And said:
“That child is the reason I married you.””
