Chapter 18: The Choice That Could Destroy Everything

I stared at the ultrasound picture.

My daughter.

My unborn child.

A person who had never hurt anyone.

And somehow, everyone wanted to use her.

The room exploded into movement.

Daniel grabbed my phone.

“No.””

I pulled it back.

“Daniel.””

“This is exactly what they want.””

“They have my baby’s information.””

“We don’t know that.””

“I do.””

My voice cracked.

“They sent the ultrasound.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew.

This was real.

Claire came closer.

“Emily, you cannot go alone.””

I looked at her.

“What choice do I have?””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You have me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked hurt.

“I’m not saying I don’t trust you.””

“Then what?””

“I’m saying every time you tried to protect me, you hid something.””

Daniel went silent.

The words hurt him.

But they were true.

“I need to make my own choice.””

The older man laughed.

“You always were stubborn.””

I turned toward him.

“You’re not part of this conversation.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

Surprise.

Because he wasn’t used to being ignored.

Good.

I was done being afraid.

Daniel looked at the message.

“There’s something wrong.””

“What?””

He pointed.

“The sender knows information only someone close would know.””

Claire frowned.

“The ultrasound?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked around.

“Someone inside the hospital.””

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“Dr. Harrison.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Maybe.””

“No.””

I remembered his kindness.

His patience.

His reassuring smile.

Then I remembered Mark standing with him.

I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

Suddenly, Mark spoke.

“I can help.””

Everyone looked at him.

I almost laughed.

“You?””

He looked ashamed.

“I know where they would take her.””

Daniel stepped toward him.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

Mark looked at me.

“For once, I’m telling the truth.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

His face changed.

Because he finally looked human.

“Because I realized something.””

“What?””

He swallowed.

“I thought I was losing money.””

A pause.

“But I was losing you.””

I felt nothing.

“You lost me the day you chose this.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

The honesty surprised me.

But it didn’t erase anything.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily, we need a plan.””

I looked at the people around me.

My brother.

My sister.

My husband.

My enemy.

Everyone connected to this nightmare.

Then I realized something.

The enemy always expected me to react.

To panic.

To run.

But nobody expected me to think.

I took the phone.

“I’m going.””

Daniel immediately objected.

“No.””

“But not alone.””

Everyone became silent.

I looked at Mark.

“You know where they want me to go.””

He nodded.

“I do.””

Then Claire.

“You know my parents’ secrets.””

She nodded.

Then Daniel.

“You know how to protect me.””

He understood.

“You want all of us there.””

“Yes.””

The older man laughed.

“You think you can outsmart us?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I think you already lost.””

His smile faded.

“Why?””

“Because you spent years believing I was weak.””

I touched my stomach.

“But you forgot something.””

I looked at everyone.

“I’m a mother.””

Silence.

Daniel prepared the team.

Mark gave the location.

An abandoned warehouse outside the city.

The same place where the final documents were supposedly hidden.

Before we left, Claire stopped me.

“Emily.””

I turned.

She held something in her hand.

A small necklace.

“My mother gave this to me before she died.””

I looked at it.

“Why are you giving it to me?””

“Because she wanted you to have it.””

I touched the necklace.

“What is it?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“A key.””

My heart stopped.

“A key to what?””

She looked toward Daniel.

Then whispered:

“The real inheritance.””

The warehouse appeared in the distance.

Dark.

Empty.

Waiting.

My phone buzzed one last time.

A message.

*You brought them.*

My blood ran cold.

Then another message appeared.

*Good. I wanted everyone here for the ending.*

The warehouse doors slowly opened.

And inside stood someone I never expected.

Someone who should have been on our side.

Someone who had known the truth all along.

My own doctor.

Dr. Harrison.

May you like

Holding a folder.

And smiling.
