Chapter 13: The Man Who Came Back for My Daughter

The first thing I did after hearing Mark escaped was touch my stomach.

Not because I was afraid for myself.

Because I knew exactly what he wanted.

My daughter.

The room around me became a blur of movement.

Daniel was giving orders.

The guards were checking cameras.

Claire was calling someone.

But I stood completely still.

For three years, Mark had convinced me he was my protector.

The person who would stand between me and danger.

Now I understood.

He was the danger.

“Emily.””

Daniel’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

“We need to move.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere secure.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel stopped.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“Running is what everyone has done.””

I pointed toward the door.

“Every time someone dangerous appeared, everyone moved me away and hid the truth.””

My voice became stronger.

“I’m done hiding.””

Daniel studied me.

“You want to face him?””

“No.””

I looked down.

“I want him to think I’m still afraid.””

A silence filled the room.

Claire understood first.

“You want to use yourself as bait.””

I nodded.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“Absolutely not.””

“Daniel—”

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“I lost you once.””

The anger disappeared from his face.

“I won’t risk losing you again.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

Because beneath all the secrets, there was still my brother.

The person who spent years trying to protect me.

“I need to know something,” I said.

Daniel looked at me.

“Did you ever stop loving me?””

His face broke.

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

“Not for one day.””

For the first time in years, I believed him.

But before I could respond, the security alarm sounded.

Everyone froze.

A guard rushed in.

“Sir.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

The guard looked nervous.

“The front gate camera detected someone.””

“Who?””

The guard swallowed.

“Mr. Harrington.””

My heart stopped.

Already.

He was here.

Daniel looked at me.

“Stay behind me.””

But I stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I wasn’t walking toward Mark because I wasn’t scared.

I was walking toward him because I finally knew who I was.

The doors opened.

Mark entered the building.

No handcuffs.

No fear.

Just that same expensive suit.

That same controlled expression.

Like he owned every room he entered.

But this time, he looked different.

Desperate.

His eyes found mine immediately.

“Emily.””

I felt nothing.

Not love.

Not longing.

Not the old need to make him happy.

Nothing.

“What do you want?””

His jaw tightened.

“You know what I want.””

I looked at my stomach.

“No.””

Mark’s eyes followed mine.

“The baby.””

Daniel moved forward.

“Get away from her.””

Mark laughed softly.

“You still think you’re the hero.””

“You’re a criminal.””

Mark looked at him.

“You have no idea what’s coming.””

Then he looked back at me.

“Emily, I never wanted this.””

I almost smiled.

“You never wanted what?””

“To hurt you.””

The lie sounded almost convincing.

Almost.

“You just wanted my inheritance?””

His face changed.

“That’s complicated.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It’s simple.””

Mark stepped closer.

“Your parents built a system designed to destroy anyone who tried to take from you.””

I stared.

“What?””

He looked at Daniel.

“Your brother knows.””

Daniel’s face darkened.

Mark continued.

“The trust wasn’t just protected by laws.””

“What was it protected by?””

Mark smiled.

“Information.””

The room became silent.

“Your parents collected evidence against powerful people.””

Claire whispered:

“Oh no.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“They didn’t just protect the money.””

Daniel finished the sentence.

“They protected the truth.””

Mark nodded.

“Exactly.””

He looked at me.

“And your daughter is the only person who can unlock it.””

My blood ran cold.

“My daughter is a baby.””

“Not to them.””

“Who are they?””

Mark didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a photograph.

And handed it to me.

I looked down.

It was a picture of my mother.

Holding a baby.

A baby that wasn’t me.

My fingers went numb.

“What is this?””

Mark whispered:

“The truth your family buried.””

I stared at the photograph.

Then at him.

“Who is that baby?””

Mark smiled.

May you like

And said:

“Your mother’s first child.””
