Chapter 16: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Nobody spoke.
The man standing in front of us looked like a ghost from a nightmare.
Mark’s father.
The person everyone believed was dead.
The person connected to every secret that had destroyed my family.
Daniel’s hand moved slowly toward me.
A protective instinct.
But the older man noticed.
And smiled.
“Still playing the hero, Daniel?””
My brother froze.
“You.””
The man laughed quietly.
“I see you remember me.””
I stared at Daniel.
“You knew he was alive?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“No.””
The man walked farther into the room.
“Your brother knew enough.””
Daniel’s eyes burned with anger.
“Don’t talk to her.””
The man ignored him.
His attention stayed on me.
“Emily Carter.””
Hearing my full name from him felt wrong.
Like he had been saying it for years.
“You grew up exactly as I predicted.””
I felt sick.
“You watched me?””
“Of course.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Why?””
He smiled.
“Because your family had something that belonged to me.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He looked amused.
“You sound just like your father.””
The mention of my father made my chest tighten.
“What did you do to him?””
The man’s expression changed slightly.
Not guilt.
Annoyance.
“Your father made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“He believed loyalty mattered more than power.””
Claire stepped forward.
“You destroyed innocent people.””
The man looked at her.
Then smiled.
“Still alive after all these years.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“You knew.””
“Of course I knew.””
He looked around the room.
“Everyone thought you disappeared.””
I stared at Claire.
She looked terrified.
The man continued.
“Your parents were weak. They hid their daughter. They hid their money. They thought they could build a future without consequences.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You killed them.””
The man’s smile disappeared.
“Careful.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice shook with anger.
“You destroyed our family.””
The man looked at him.
“And you survived.””
A silence followed.
Then he looked at Mark.
“You failed.””
Mark’s face changed.
For the first time, I saw something shocking.
Mark was afraid of his father.
Not respect.
Not admiration.
Fear.
“You told me everything would be handled,” Mark said.
His father laughed.
“You were supposed to control a woman.””
His eyes moved to me.
“Not fall in love with her.””
My stomach turned.
“You never loved me.””
Mark looked at me.
For a second, I saw shame.
Then it disappeared.
“I did what I had to do.””
The answer hurt.
But it also freed me.
Because there was nothing left to save.
The older man walked toward the table.
“The trust documents.””
Daniel moved.
“You’ll never get them.””
The man smiled.
“I already have.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
He pulled out a small device.
“A copy of your father’s final security key.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“Your father was brilliant.””
He tapped the device.
“He knew someone would try to steal everything.””
I stared.
“Then why are you still here?””
The man smiled.
“Because he made one mistake.””
“What?””
“He trusted his children.””
The room went quiet.
My heart raced.
“What does that mean?””
The man looked at me.
“Your father didn’t leave the inheritance to you.””
I frowned.
“Then who?””
He smiled.
“To your unborn child.””
Everything stopped.
I felt my daughter move.
The man noticed.
“That child is the final key.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You’re not touching her.””
The man laughed.
“You still don’t understand.””
He looked around.
“I don’t need to.””
Then he pressed a button.
A screen behind him turned on.
A hospital camera feed appeared.
My blood froze.
Because the image showed my maternity clinic.
And someone standing outside.
My doctor.
Dr. Harrison.
Alive.
The man smiled.
“Your doctor was never working for Mark.””
My heart pounded.
“Then who?””
He looked at me.
“Me.””
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
A medical authorization form.
With my signature.
My fake signature.
My hands went cold.
“No…”
The man leaned closer.
“You signed away your rights weeks ago.””
I stared at the paper.
I never signed that.
But the signature looked exactly like mine.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Emily…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
His face was filled with horror.
“The baby appointment you missed today…”
I swallowed.
“What about it?””
Daniel looked at the document.
“It wasn’t an appointment.””
May you like
A cold silence filled the room.
“It was a setup.””
