Chapter 4: The Message I Was Never Supposed to Read

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

*Emily, if you want to know what really happened to your family, come alone. Your brother has been lying to you too.*

My fingers went cold around the phone.

For three years, I had lived inside a story Mark created for me.

My brother abandoned me.

My family didn’t want me.

I was alone.

Those were the words Mark repeated until they became my reality.

But now, standing between my husband and the brother I thought I lost forever, I realized something terrifying.

I had no idea who had been telling me the truth.

“Emily,” Daniel said quietly.

I looked up.

His face was different now.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Worried.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

The parking lot went silent.

Mark looked almost relieved.

A small smile appeared on his face.

There it was.

The reaction of a man who had just found a crack in his enemy’s armor.

“Ask him,” Mark said.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Not here.””

I laughed softly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I was exhausted.

“Not here?””

I looked around at the people watching us.

“My husband slapped me in front of strangers. He tried to force me into his car. He lied about my brother being alive.””

I held up the phone.

“And now someone is telling me my brother lied too.””

My voice cracked.

“I think I deserve answers.””

Daniel looked down.

For the first time since he arrived, he looked like my older brother again.

Not a powerful businessman.

Not someone who had everything under control.

Just a man carrying guilt.

“I wanted to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Mark stepped forward.

“Because everyone thinks they know what’s best for you.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“You don’t get to speak about protecting anyone.””

Mark smiled.

“You’re still pretending you’re the hero.””

One of Daniel’s men moved closer.

“Sir—”

Daniel stopped him.

Then he looked at me.

“Emily, I need you to trust me for five minutes.””

I stared at him.

“Trust you?””

The word hurt.

Because I wanted to.

So badly.

When I was nineteen, Daniel was the person who walked me home when I was scared. He was the person who sat outside my hospital room when I broke my leg. He was the person who promised our parents he would always take care of me.

Then he disappeared.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just gone.

And Mark was there.

He filled the silence.

“He chose money over you.””

“He didn’t care enough to stay.””

“You’re better off without him.””

I believed every word.

Because I had nobody else.

“Tell me what happened,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at Mark.

Then back at me.

“Your husband knows exactly why I disappeared.””

Mark’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“You knew?””

I turned to him.

Mark said nothing.

That silence was an answer.

“Mark.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Emily, you’re upset.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I’m finally seeing clearly.””

The words seemed to anger him.

His entire face hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Daniel immediately moved closer to me.

“That’s enough.””

Mark ignored him.

“You think your brother saved you today?””

He pointed at Daniel.

“You don’t know what he did.””

A chill moved through me.

“What did he do?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Three years ago, I discovered Mark was stealing from his company.””

Mark laughed.

“That’s your version?””

Daniel continued.

“He was moving money through fake accounts. When I confronted him, he threatened me.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“And then?””

Daniel looked away.

“And then there was an accident.””

The way he said it made my stomach twist.

“What accident?””

Mark suddenly spoke.

“Ask your brother why he ran.””

Daniel’s eyes became cold.

“Because I was trying to keep her alive.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel took out another folder.

This one was older.

The paper was worn.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of me.

But younger.

Standing outside my apartment.

And across the street…

Mark.

Watching.

My breath stopped.

“He was already following you before you met him,” Daniel said.

I stared at the picture.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Mark.

“That’s impossible.””

Mark’s face was unreadable.

Daniel pointed at the photograph.

“He didn’t meet you by chance, Emily.””

The world tilted.

The man I thought had chosen me.

The man I thought loved me.

Had found me.

Not by accident.

But by design.

Then another car pulled into the parking lot.

A woman stepped out.

She looked directly at me.

And when she saw Mark, her face turned pale.

“Emily?””

I had never seen her before.

But she knew my name.

She walked closer, trembling.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel immediately stepped in front of me.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at him.

Then at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“I’m the person who knows why your parents really died.””
