Chapter 5: The Woman From My Past

Nobody moved.

The woman stood in front of us, holding an old brown envelope against her chest.

My parents.

That was the one subject I avoided my entire adult life.

They died when I was young.

A car accident.

That was what I had always been told.

A tragic accident.

A closed chapter.

But now this stranger was standing in front of me, saying she knew the truth.

Daniel looked furious.

“Who sent you?””

The woman shook her head.

“No one.””

Her eyes moved to me.

“I’ve been trying to find you for years.””

Mark suddenly stepped forward.

“Emily, don’t listen to her.””

The woman flinched when she saw him.

And that reaction told me everything.

She wasn’t afraid of Daniel.

She wasn’t afraid of the security men.

She was afraid of Mark.

“Who is she?”” I asked.

Mark said nothing.

Daniel answered.

“Her name is Claire Bennett.””

The woman looked at Daniel.

“You knew?””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“I knew she had information.””

“But you never told Emily.””

My heart sank.

Another secret.

Another missing piece.

I looked at my brother.

“You knew about her?””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“I was trying to verify everything first.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone is always trying to protect me by hiding the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

Claire stepped closer.

“I understand why you don’t trust anyone right now.””

She held out the envelope.

“But you need to see this.””

I didn’t move.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily—”

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I’m done being told what I can handle.””

The words surprised even me.

For years, I had been quiet.

Careful.

Afraid.

But something had changed in that parking lot.

Maybe it was the slap.

Maybe it was seeing those baby shoes in the gutter.

Maybe it was realizing I had spent years apologizing for things I didn’t do.

I took the envelope.

Inside was a newspaper clipping.

My hands shook as I read the headline.

*LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER AND WIFE KILLED IN HIGHWAY COLLISION*

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

A name was mentioned.

A witness.

A witness who claimed the accident was caused by reckless driving.

Claire touched the paper.

“That witness lied.””

I looked up.

“How do you know?””

“Because I was there.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

“You were there?””

Claire nodded.

“I worked for your father.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“My father’s company?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Mark.

“And I know what he was trying to steal.””

Mark’s voice became dangerous.

“Enough.””

Claire stepped back.

But she didn’t run.

She looked at me.

“Your parents discovered someone was taking money from their company.””

My fingers tightened around the newspaper.

“Who?””

Claire swallowed.

“Your father thought it was an employee.””

She looked at Mark.

“Until he found out it was someone much closer.””

Mark’s face turned cold.

“This is ridiculous.””

Claire continued.

“He was planning to expose everything.””

I looked at Mark.

“You?””

He stared at me.

Not denying.

Not confirming.

Just calculating.

Daniel stepped beside me.

“Claire, tell her everything.””

The woman hesitated.

Then she opened the envelope again.

This time, she pulled out a small photograph.

A photograph of a young Mark.

Standing beside my father.

My blood went cold.

Because I recognized the place.

It was my childhood home.

“What is this?””

Claire whispered:

“Your husband didn’t enter your life because he wanted your money.””

I looked at her.

“Then why?””

She looked at the picture.

“Because your family’s fortune was supposed to belong to him.””

A silence followed.

Then Mark laughed.

A quiet, terrifying laugh.

“You really think you understand?””

I turned toward him.

For the first time, he didn’t look like a man trying to hide.

He looked like a man preparing to attack.

“You want the truth, Emily?””

My heart raced.

“Fine.””

He stepped closer.

“But before you believe them…”

May you like

He looked at Daniel.

“…ask your brother what he did the night our parents died.””
