Chapter 3: The Secret Behind My Husband’s Wealth
The clinic parking lot felt like a courtroom.
Everyone was watching.
But for once, I wasn’t the one on trial.
Mark stepped toward me.
“Emily, don’t listen to him.””
I held the folder tighter.
“Why?””
His expression shifted.
“Because he’s angry.””
Daniel laughed once.
“Angry?””
He pulled out his phone.
“No. I’m prepared.””
Mark’s eyes followed the phone.
And for the first time, I saw panic.
Real panic.
Daniel pressed a button.
A recording played.
Mark’s own voice filled the parking lot.
“She trusts me. She won’t fight.””
My stomach dropped.
It was his voice.
Months earlier.
Before I knew what he was planning.
Another recording followed.
“She has no idea how much that property is worth.””
I closed my eyes.
The man I slept beside.
The man who kissed my forehead every morning.
The father of my child.
He had been calculating my downfall.
Mark reached for the phone.
Daniel moved between us.
“Don’t.””
Mark stopped.
“You think this proves something?””
Daniel looked at him.
“It proves intent.””
Mark smiled suddenly.
A cold, familiar smile.
“You still don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He fixed his suit jacket.
“You think you’ve won because your brother showed up?””
The confidence was returning.
That terrified me.
Mark had always been most dangerous when he felt cornered.
“You don’t know who you’re dealing with,” he said.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“No. She finally does.””
Mark ignored him.
He looked directly at me.
“Emily, everything you have is because of me.””
I felt something inside me break.
Not sadness.
Not fear.
Something stronger.
Anger.
“Everything I have?””
I looked down at my ring.
The diamond suddenly felt heavy.
“You mean the house my grandmother gave me?””
Mark’s mouth closed.
“The money you controlled?””
Silence.
“The life you convinced me I owed you?””
His face hardened.
“You’re being emotional.””
I almost smiled.
That was his favorite word.
Emotional.
Whenever I questioned him.
Whenever I cried.
Whenever I noticed the truth.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Tell her why you married her.””
Mark looked at him.
“Careful.””
“Tell her.””
I looked at my husband.
My heart was pounding.
“Why did you marry me?””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Mark whispered:
“Because I needed access.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed everything.
A woman near the entrance covered her mouth.
Someone behind me gasped.
Mark seemed to realize what he had said.
His face changed.
“Emily, that’s not what I meant.””
But it was.
It was exactly what he meant.
Daniel took a breath.
“There’s something else she needs to know.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He hesitated.
That frightened me.
Because Daniel had never been afraid to tell me the truth.
“The company Mark built…”
Mark immediately interrupted.
“Don’t.””
Daniel continued.
“Was built with stolen money.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
Mark’s expression turned furious.
“You have no proof.””
Daniel opened another document.
“Actually, I do.””
He handed it to me.
The page showed financial transfers.
Names.
Dates.
And at the bottom was a signature.
Mark’s signature.
I stared at it.
The man who spent years telling me he was untouchable had left a trail behind him.
But then my phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
I didn’t recognize the number.
Daniel looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“Don’t answer that.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Because before he could explain, a message appeared.
One sentence.
One name.
And a warning that made Daniel go completely silent.
May you like
The message read:
*Emily, if you want to know what really happened to your family, come alone. Your brother has been lying to you too.*
