Chapter 17: The Plan That Started Before My Marriage

I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.

A setup.

The appointment.

The clinic.

The missing insurance card.

Everything.

It had all been planned.

I looked at Mark.

“You knew.””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

Mark lowered his eyes.

“I knew they wanted the appointment.””

The pain I felt wasn’t anger anymore.

It was disgust.

“You let me walk into that.””

“I was trying to fix it.””

I stared at him.

“You hit me because you were angry the plan failed.””

He looked away.

The truth was finally too obvious to deny.

Daniel stepped between us.

“You’re done.””

Mark’s father laughed.

“You both still think this is about crime.””

He pointed at the screen.

“This is about ownership.””

I looked at him.

“My daughter is not property.””

The man smiled.

“You still don’t understand your family.””

I hated how calm he was.

“You were born into a war you never knew existed.””

He walked toward the screen.

“Your parents spent their lives protecting an empire.””

I shook my head.

“My parents wanted a family.””

“Yes.””

His smile disappeared.

“And that made them weak.””

Claire looked at him.

“You’re sick.””

He ignored her.

“Your father built the Carter foundation with one rule.””

He tapped the screen.

“Only someone with Carter blood can control it.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“And you couldn’t.””

The man looked at him.

“Exactly.””

I understood.

He didn’t just want money.

He wanted power.

He wanted what my family represented.

“You married me to get access.””

The man smiled.

“Mark did.””

I looked at my husband.

“And you?””

“I created the opportunity.””

The words felt unreal.

Mark’s father continued.

“Mark was chosen because he knew how to manipulate people.””

I looked at Mark.

The perfect husband.

The perfect mask.

The man who convinced me I was lucky.

“You studied me.””

Mark looked away.

“Yes.””

My chest hurt.

“How long?””

He was quiet.

Then:

“Before we met.””

The answer destroyed the last piece of doubt.

I closed my eyes.

Three years.

My entire marriage.

A performance.

The older man stepped closer.

“But there was one thing nobody expected.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Your brother.””

Daniel stared.

The man smiled.

“He was supposed to disappear.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“But I didn’t.””

“No.””

The man looked annoyed.

“You survived.””

Then he turned to me.

“And because of that, the plan became harder.””

A thought came to me.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at me.

“You didn’t want Daniel dead.””

The man smiled.

“You’re smarter than they said.””

My stomach twisted.

“You wanted him blamed.””

“Yes.””

Daniel went silent.

Because he understood too.

The fire.

The evidence.

The disappearance.

Everything was designed.

Not just to remove him.

To make him look guilty.

A sound interrupted us.

A phone ringing.

Everyone looked at Mark.

He slowly pulled out his phone.

His father’s expression changed.

“Don’t answer.””

Mark hesitated.

That was unusual.

Then he looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

“What?””

Daniel moved.

“What is it?””

Mark didn’t respond.

I saw fear.

Real fear.

He turned the phone around.

A message.

From an unknown number.

*You were never the chosen one.*

The room went silent.

Another message appeared.

*Bring Emily to the warehouse, or I reveal what you did.*

Mark’s breathing changed.

His father looked furious.

“Who sent that?””

Mark whispered:

“I don’t know.””

I watched him carefully.

For years, Mark controlled every situation.

But now someone was controlling him.

Someone above him.

The man who claimed to own everything suddenly looked powerless.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone turned.

A new message.

Different number.

Different sender.

I opened it.

And my blood ran cold.

*Emily, if you want to save your daughter, come alone.*

Below it was a picture.

A picture of my baby’s ultrasound.

May you like

And underneath:

*We know where she will be born.*
