Chapter 12: The Person Behind Everything

The words made the room freeze.

*The baby belongs to us.*

Not Mark.

Not Victoria.

Us.

That single word terrified me.

Because it meant there were more people involved.

Daniel immediately moved toward the security monitors.

“Lock every exit.””

The guards rushed out.

I stood there, frozen.

My hand rested over my stomach.

My daughter moved slightly.

A tiny kick.

A reminder that this was real.

She was real.

And someone wanted to take her.

Claire came beside me.

“Emily.””

I looked at her.

“What if I can’t protect her?””

Claire grabbed my hand.

“You already are.””

I shook my head.

“I didn’t even know the truth.””

“You know now.””

Daniel returned with a tablet.

His expression was serious.

“The person who broke in didn’t steal anything.””

“What?””

“They went directly to one room.””

He turned the screen toward us.

Security footage showed a person in a dark coat entering Daniel’s office.

They ignored the money.

Ignored the computers.

Ignored everything.

They went straight to one cabinet.

“The files.””

Daniel nodded.

“The files about your parents.””

My stomach tightened.

“They wanted evidence.””

“Yes.””

A thought entered my mind.

“Then they’re scared.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Exactly.””

For the first time, I felt something besides fear.

Anger.

Someone had spent years controlling my life.

But now they were afraid of me finding the truth.

“Find them.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“Find whoever did this.””

He stared for a moment.

Then slowly nodded.

“I will.””

Hours passed.

The police arrived.

Security teams searched the building.

But whoever entered was gone.

Almost like they were never there.

Until they found something.

A piece of paper.

Left on Daniel’s desk.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

It was the same handwriting from the threatening messages.

Daniel unfolded it.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

Three words.

*Ask your mother.*

My heart sank.

“My mother is dead.””

Claire stepped closer.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

She looked at Daniel.

And he looked away.

That was the moment I knew.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except me.

“Explain.””

Daniel sighed.

“Your mother left something behind.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

My eyes widened.

“A recording?””

He nodded.

“Before she died, she created a message that would only be found if something happened.””

I stared.

“What something?””

Daniel looked at the note.

“This.””

He took a small device from a locked drawer.

My hands shook as he placed it on the table.

A recording.

From my mother.

The person I had missed every day of my life.

Daniel pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman’s voice.

My mother.

“Emily…”

My knees nearly gave out.

“if you are hearing this, it means I was right.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I was right to be afraid.””

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

“Your father and I discovered that someone close to us was planning to destroy our family.””

A pause.

Then my mother said:

“The person you trust most may be the person who betrayed you.””

Everyone became silent.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Emily, if you have a daughter, she cannot inherit the trust.””

I stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at me.

The recording continued.

“Because the inheritance was never created for her.””

My heart pounded.

“Your daughter is only the key.””

The room went silent.

Then my mother whispered:

“The real heir is already alive.””

I stared at the device.

“What?””

Daniel looked horrified.

Claire covered her mouth.

My mother’s voice continued:

“And Emily…”

A pause.

“If they tell you the baby is the reason they came after you…”

Static interrupted.

Then her final words came through.

“Don’t believe them.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

My entire understanding of my life had shattered again.

The baby.

The inheritance.

The marriage.

Everything.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed within seconds.

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then he looked at me.

“Emily…”

My heart sank.

“What?””

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“Mark escaped custody.””

I froze.

“How?””

He looked toward the door.

“Because someone inside the police station helped him.””

A cold silence filled the room.

May you like

Then Daniel said the one thing I never wanted to hear.

“Your husband is coming for you.””
