Chapter 15: The Aunt’s Final Betrayal

Nobody moved.

Victoria stood in the doorway, her hand shaking around the weapon.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who hugged me when I cried.

The woman I trusted after losing my parents.

Now she was pointing a gun at me.

I felt something inside me go numb.

“Aunt Victoria.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Emily…”

“Why?””

The question came out quietly.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Just broken.

She looked away.

“I never wanted this.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Put the gun down.””

Victoria’s expression changed.

“Don’t pretend you’re better than me.””

Daniel froze.

“I lost everything too.””

“You betrayed her.””

Victoria looked at me.

“I was trying to survive.””

I laughed softly.

“Everyone says that.””

Mark watched silently.

And suddenly I noticed something.

He wasn’t surprised.

He expected her.

“You knew she was coming.””

Mark smiled.

Victoria looked at him.

“You promised me protection.””

My stomach dropped.

They were working together.

Again.

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“You made a deal with him.””

Victoria’s eyes filled with shame.

“I had no choice.””

“There is always a choice.””

She looked at me.

“Your father took everything from me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He left me nothing.””

“You were his sister.””

She laughed bitterly.

“He trusted everyone except me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Victoria’s face tightened.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

The room went quiet.

She lowered the gun slightly.

“My brother discovered I was helping Mark’s father.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“What?””

Victoria swallowed.

“I needed money.””

The betrayal hurt more than I expected.

“From him?””

She nodded.

“I thought it was temporary.””

Mark stepped in.

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent now.””

Victoria looked at him with hatred.

“You used me too.””

I realized something.

Everyone here had used everyone else.

Except me.

I was the prize they fought over.

The asset.

The key.

Not a person.

My hand moved protectively over my stomach.

And that gave me clarity.

“You all made one mistake.””

Everyone looked at me.

I continued.

“You thought I was the thing you were fighting over.””

I looked at Mark.

“You thought my daughter was a key.””

Then Victoria.

“You thought my family’s money was more important than me.””

Then Daniel.

“You thought hiding the truth protected me.””

My voice shook.

“But nobody asked what I wanted.””

The room went silent.

For the first time, nobody had an answer.

Victoria looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at her.

“I believed you.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t know.””

A sound came from behind us.

A door opening.

Everyone turned.

A man entered.

Older.

Gray hair.

A scar across his face.

Mark immediately stepped back.

Impossible fear appeared on his face.

I had never seen Mark afraid before.

But now he looked terrified.

The man smiled.

“Enough.””

Daniel whispered:

“No…”

I looked at him.

“You know him?””

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

The man looked at me.

Then at my stomach.

And smiled.

“I’m the reason your parents died.””

The room froze.

He stepped closer.

“And I’m the rightful owner of everything your family built.””

Mark whispered:

“Father…”

My blood ran cold.

Mark’s father.

Alive.

He looked at me.

Then at my unborn child.

And said:

“After all these years…”

May you like

A cruel smile appeared.

“…the Carter bloodline finally gave me what I needed.””
