Chapter 2: The Man Mark Tried to Hide
Mark slowly released my wrist.
Not because he wanted to.
Because he had no choice.
The man standing in front of him had the kind of presence that made people step aside without being asked.
My brother.
Daniel Carter.
The man Mark had told me was gone forever.
“Daniel…” Mark whispered.
My heart pounded.
I looked between them.
“How do you know my brother?””
Mark didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
Because Mark always had an answer.
He always had a way to twist the truth until I questioned myself.
But now, he looked trapped.
Daniel walked toward me.
His expression softened immediately.
“Are you hurt?””
I tried to speak.
Nothing came out.
After three years of believing I had no one, seeing my brother standing there felt unreal.
“I thought you were dead,” I finally whispered.
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I know.””
Mark looked between us.
“You lied to her.””
Daniel turned his eyes toward him.
“No. You did.””
The two men stared at each other.
And suddenly I understood.
This was bigger than my husband hurting me.
There was a history between them.
A dangerous one.
Daniel removed his jacket and placed it around my shoulders.
“I’m sorry I’m late, Emily.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“You knew?””
He looked down.
“I knew something was wrong. I didn’t know how bad it had become.””
Mark scoffed.
“You’re making a scene.””
Daniel looked at him calmly.
“My sister has a handprint on her face, a bruised wrist, and your fingerprints around her arm.””
He glanced toward the clinic entrance.
“And there are witnesses.””
Mark’s face darkened.
“You think you can intimidate me?””
One of the men in suits stepped forward.
Daniel raised his hand, stopping him.
“No.””
Then Daniel looked directly at Mark.
“I don’t need to intimidate you.””
Mark laughed.
“You disappeared for years. You have no idea what happened.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Actually, I know everything.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
A woman walking by stopped near the clinic doors and quietly approached.
“Excuse me,” she said.
“I saw what happened.””
Mark immediately turned.
“You should stay out of this.””
The woman flinched.
But Daniel stepped beside her.
“She doesn’t have to be afraid of you anymore.””
The woman handed Daniel her phone.
“I recorded part of it.””
Mark’s face went pale.
“You recorded me?””
She nodded.
“You hit her.””
The silence afterward felt heavier than any scream.
I stared at Mark.
For years, he controlled every room he entered.
But now strangers were looking at him differently.
Not as the successful businessman.
Not as the wealthy husband.
As the man who hurt his pregnant wife.
Mark’s voice dropped.
“Emily, don’t do this.””
I almost laughed.
Don’t do this.
Like I was the problem.
Like I had created the bruise on my own face.
Like I had kicked those baby shoes into the gutter.
“You told me my brother abandoned me,” I said.
Mark looked away.
“You told me nobody cared.””
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“Because he made sure she believed that.””
I turned toward my brother.
“What is he talking about?””
Daniel took a slow breath.
“Mark didn’t just separate you from me, Emily.””
He looked at Mark.
“He destroyed evidence.””
My chest tightened.
“Evidence of what?””
Mark stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t.””
That single sentence told me everything.
Daniel reached into his coat and pulled out a folder.
He handed it to me.
Inside were photographs.
Bank records.
Documents.
My hands shook as I looked through them.
The first page made my blood run cold.
A transfer agreement.
My property.
The house my grandmother left me.
The signature line was already prepared.
But the second page was worse.
A private message from Mark to his attorney.
My eyes moved across the words.
“She has no idea her brother is still alive. Once the property transfer is complete, everything will be secured.””
I stopped breathing.
Everything around me became blurry.
Mark’s voice became distant.
“Emily, listen to me.””
I looked up.
For the first time, I didn’t see the man I married.
I saw a stranger.
A stranger who had spent years building a cage around me.
Daniel stepped closer.
“There’s more.””
I swallowed.
“What more?””
He looked toward the black SUV.
Then back at me.
“The reason Mark was so desperate for you to sign those papers…”
May you like
He paused.
“Is because he already knew someone was coming to take everything away from him.””
