Chapter 9: The Signature That Was Impossible
Nobody spoke.
Not even Vanessa.
The entire church stared at the paper.
The signature at the bottom wasn’t just familiar.
It was impossible.
My eyes locked onto it.
*Emily Carter.*
My wife’s name.
My dead wife’s signature.
Again.
But this time, something felt different.
Something was wrong.
I stepped closer.
“Where did you get this?””
Claire looked at me.
“From Vanessa’s files.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
“You said Emily gave you documents.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Did she?””
Her lips parted.
Nothing came out.
I looked at the paper again.
“This signature…”
Marcus took it from Claire.
He studied it.
Then his face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“This isn’t Emily’s signature.””
My heart stopped.
“But it looks like it.””
“That’s the point.””
Marcus turned the paper around.
“Emily always signed her full name with a specific mark at the end.””
He pointed.
“This one is missing.””
I stared.
A tiny detail.
Something nobody else would notice.
But Marcus did.
Because he knew Emily.
Because he had been there.
Vanessa whispered:
“Stop.””
Nobody listened.
Claire looked at her sister.
“You forged her signature.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa backed away.
“I didn’t create everything.””
The words hung in the air.
I noticed.
Everyone noticed.
Not:
“I didn’t do it.””
But:
“I didn’t create everything.””
I stepped forward.
“Who helped you?””
Vanessa looked away.
That was the first real answer she gave all day.
Someone else.
Someone behind her.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from an unknown number.
I opened it.
A single sentence.
*Ask Vanessa who paid for Lily’s custody investigation.*
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who paid?””
Her face changed.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
“Who paid for the investigation into my daughter?””
Silence.
Then Claire spoke.
“I know.””
Everyone turned.
Claire looked devastated.
“It wasn’t Vanessa’s idea.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Claire looked toward the church doors.
“She was following instructions.””
The room became colder.
“Whose instructions?””
Claire hesitated.
Then she said:
“Someone who wanted Ethan distracted.””
I felt a chill.
“Distracted from what?””
Nobody answered.
Until Lily spoke.
A tiny voice.
A scared voice.
“Daddy…”
I turned immediately.
“What is it?””
She looked at Vanessa.
Then at the person standing outside the church window.
“I’ve seen him before.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Lily pointed.
Everyone followed her finger.
Outside the glass.
Standing in the rain.
Was a man I had never seen before.
But Lily recognized him.
“He came to our house when you were gone.””
I felt the world shift.
“What man?””
Lily whispered:
“The man who told Vanessa she was going to be my new mommy.””
May you like
The church doors slowly opened.
And the stranger walked inside.
