Chapter 14: The Person Who Stole Emily’s Identity
Nobody breathed.
At least that’s what it felt like.
The entire church was waiting for one answer.
Who had used Emily’s name?
Who had tried to take control of my daughter’s future?
Jonathan flipped through the papers quickly.
“This request was submitted electronically.””
My father stepped closer.
“When?””
“Three days ago.””
My eyes narrowed.
“That was before the wedding.””
Jonathan nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Daniel.
Then Marcus.
Someone had planned this long before today.
Someone had been moving pieces around while I was choosing flowers and writing vows.
“Who submitted it?””
Jonathan looked uncomfortable.
“We’re still trying to verify.””
I slammed my hand against the folder.
“Someone tried to take my daughter.””
My voice echoed.
“I deserve a name.””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily spoke.
Quietly.
“Daddy.””
I turned.
“What?””
She pointed toward the papers.
“That picture.””
I frowned.
“What picture?””
She stepped closer.
My mother held her hand as she approached.
Lily pointed to a printed page inside the folder.
“There.””
I looked down.
It was a screenshot.
A profile picture attached to an account.
My heart stopped.
Because Lily recognized it.
“Who is that?””
She whispered:
“That’s the man who came with Vanessa.””
Everyone looked at Daniel.
But Lily shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed again.
“Not him.””
My eyes moved back to the picture.
A man.
Older.
Gray hair.
A familiar face.
And then I realized.
I knew him.
Everyone knew him.
My father’s business partner.
A man who had attended family dinners.
A man Emily trusted.
“Richard.””
My father’s face changed.
“No.””
The name came out like a warning.
Richard Hale.
My father’s closest friend for twenty years.
My father’s business partner.
The man who gave a speech at Emily’s funeral.
The man who hugged me and said, “We’ll protect that little girl.””
My hands shook.
“Why would he do this?””
My father looked devastated.
“Because of the company.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He closed his eyes.
“Emily’s trust owns shares.””
I understood.
Money.
Again.
“Richard wanted control.””
My father nodded.
“He helped build the company. He believed he deserved those shares.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“But Emily moved them into Lily’s name.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
A child who didn’t even understand why adults were fighting.
And yet everyone wanted what belonged to her.
Vanessa suddenly whispered:
“Richard contacted me.””
Everyone turned.
My eyes locked onto her.
“When?””
She looked ashamed.
“Months ago.””
My anger returned.
“You knew him?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
She looked down.
“He promised he could help me.””
“With what?””
She swallowed.
“With becoming part of Lily’s life.””
I felt sick.
“So he used you.””
She nodded.
“I thought I was helping myself.””
A painful silence followed.
Then she looked at Lily.
“I was wrong.””
For once, there was no manipulation.
No excuse.
Just regret.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time, from Richard.
A simple text.
*You’re making this harder than it needs to be.*
My blood ran cold.
Then another message arrived.
*Bring Lily to the company office. We can resolve this quietly.*
I stared at the screen.
My father saw my face.
“What did he say?””
I handed him the phone.
He read it.
His expression changed.
“He knows we found out.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“We need to call the police.””
Before anyone could answer, the church doors opened again.
A woman rushed inside.
She was breathing heavily.
She looked terrified.
“Ethan.””
I didn’t know her.
But she knew me.
She held a small envelope.
“I’m Emily’s old attorney.””
My heart stopped.
She walked toward me.
“I’ve been trying to find you for days.””
I took the envelope.
“Why?””
Her eyes moved to Lily.
“Because Emily left one final message.””
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Only one sentence.
And it changed everything.
*Ethan, if Richard ever comes for Lily, do not trust anyone who says they are protecting her.*
I looked up.
Everyone was silent.
May you like
Because the warning wasn’t about Richard.
It was about us.
