Chapter 16: The Secret About Lily’s Birth
The words stayed in my head long after the call ended.
*He wants Lily herself.*
Not her inheritance.
Not her trust.
Not her money.
Her.
I looked down at my daughter.
She was still holding my hand, unaware that another secret had just been placed on her shoulders.
A secret about the day she was born.
A secret about her mother.
A secret about me.
I lifted the phone again.
“Sarah?””
The line was still connected.
“Yes.””
“Tell me everything.””
She hesitated.
“I shouldn’t be doing this.””
“Then why are you?””
A long pause.
“Because I saw what Richard was planning.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What was he planning?””
Sarah’s voice shook.
“He believed Lily was the key.””
“The key to what?””
“To the company.””
I closed my eyes.
Not again.
Everything came back to money.
Control.
Power.
“Explain.””
“Emily didn’t just put shares into a trust.””
Sarah lowered her voice.
“She put something else in there.””
“What?””
“Proof.””
The word echoed.
“Proof of what?””
“Something Richard did years ago.””
My father stepped closer.
“Ethan?””
I put the call on speaker.
Everyone listened.
Sarah continued.
“Richard wasn’t afraid of losing money. He was afraid Emily would reveal what she knew.””
The attorney looked shocked.
“Emily discovered something?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
Sarah swallowed.
“Richard manipulated company records. He moved money. He hid transactions.””
My father’s face changed.
Because he understood.
“He was stealing.””
Sarah didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I looked at my father.
“You didn’t know?””
He shook his head slowly.
“No.””
For the first time, I saw my father look truly broken.
Twenty years of friendship.
Twenty years of trust.
Gone.
But Sarah wasn’t finished.
“There’s more.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“Richard believed Emily left evidence inside Lily’s trust.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Inside her trust?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Sarah explained.
“Emily knew Richard would come after the money. So she created a condition.””
The attorney stepped forward.
“What condition?””
“If anyone attempted to take control of Lily’s inheritance illegally, the evidence would automatically be released.””
Silence.
Emily.
Even after death.
She was still protecting Lily.
My eyes burned.
“She knew.””
Claire whispered:
“She always knew.””
Sarah continued.
“Richard spent years trying to find another way.””
“Through Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
“He convinced Vanessa that if she became Lily’s legal guardian, she could access everything.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I was stupid.””
Nobody answered.
Because she was.
But she was also used.
Sarah’s voice became urgent.
“Ethan, there’s something you need to know.””
“What?””
“Richard found another way.””
The church went silent.
“What way?””
“He filed a claim saying Lily’s birth records were inaccurate.””
My blood froze.
“What?””
Sarah continued.
“He believes if he can prove something about Lily’s birth, he can challenge Emily’s trust.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
My whole world.
“What could he possibly prove?””
Nobody spoke.
Then the attorney looked at me.
And I knew.
She knew something.
“What?””
She slowly opened her briefcase.
“Ethan…”
“Tell me.””
She pulled out a sealed envelope.
“This was supposed to be opened when Lily turned eighteen.””
My heart stopped.
“Why do you have it?””
“Because Emily changed the instructions.””
The attorney looked at the envelope.
“She added a note.””
“What note?””
The attorney handed it to me.
I opened it.
Emily’s handwriting.
Again.
But this time, the words made my knees weak.
*Ethan, if you are reading this before Lily turns eighteen, then Richard found out the truth.*
I looked up.
“What truth?””
The attorney whispered:
“The truth about Lily’s biological father.””
The room disappeared.
I couldn’t hear anything.
Not the guests.
Not the rain.
Not even my own breathing.
Because I already knew the answer.
I was Lily’s father.
I had been there.
I held her the day she was born.
I cut the cord.
I whispered her name.
But Emily’s letter continued.
*You are her father in every way that matters. But there is something I never told you.*
My hands trembled.
I kept reading.
*The man who believes he has a claim over Lily is not a stranger.*
I looked toward the church doors.
Toward the storm outside.
May you like
And then Emily’s final sentence broke me.
*He is someone you have trusted your entire life.*
