Chapter 18: The Man Behind Everything
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The words weren’t loud.
They weren’t dramatic.
Richard said them calmly.
Like he was telling me the weather.
*Lily was never your daughter.*
My entire body went numb.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Richard laughed softly.
“You always were emotional, Ethan.””
I gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
“Close.””
“Show yourself.””
“Soon.””
I looked around.
Everyone was watching me.
They didn’t hear him.
Only me.
Only the voice of the man who had just tried to erase my entire life.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Emily hide the truth?””
I froze.
Because I didn’t know.
Richard continued.
“She knew.””
I closed my eyes.
“She knew everything.””
I looked at Lily.
The little girl who called me Daddy.
The little girl who ran to me when she was scared.
The little girl whose first steps I recorded.
Whose first word I remembered.
I didn’t care about blood.
I didn’t care about paperwork.
But I needed the truth.
“Tell me.””
Richard became quiet.
“What?””
“Tell me the truth.””
A pause.
Then:
“Come to the company.””
“No.””
“Then you’ll never know.””
My anger rose.
“You think I’ll let you manipulate me?””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“I think you’ll do anything for Lily.””
That was the part that scared me.
Because he was right.
The call ended.
I lowered the phone.
My father stepped closer.
“What did he say?””
I looked at everyone.
Then at Lily.
“Richard wants me to go to his office.””
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“He has answers.””
“He wants you alone.””
“I know.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Then don’t go.””
I looked at her.
“If there’s a chance he knows something about Lily…”
She stopped.
Because she understood.
A parent doesn’t ignore a threat.
Even when it’s a trap.
My father grabbed my shoulder.
“You’re not going alone.””
I looked at him.
For years, I thought I knew my father.
Today, everything changed.
But one thing remained.
He loved Lily.
“I need to know what happened.””
The attorney spoke.
“There is another option.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
She opened her briefcase.
“Emily left instructions for this situation.””
My heart stopped.
“Another letter?””
She nodded.
“But it requires all witnesses present.””
I frowned.
“All witnesses?””
“Yes.””
She looked around the church.
“Everyone who has been involved.””
Nobody understood.
Then she pulled out a small device.
“A recording.””
My chest tightened.
Emily’s voice.
After three years.
I wasn’t ready.
The attorney pressed play.
Static filled the church.
Then a voice.
A voice I would recognize anywhere.
“Ethan…”
My knees nearly gave out.
Emily.
Everyone became silent.
Her voice was weak.
But clear.
“If you’re hearing this, then I’m gone.””
I covered my mouth.
Lily looked at me.
“Mommy?””
I nodded through tears.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
The recording continued.
“I’m sorry I kept secrets.””
A pause.
“But I did it because I knew the truth would hurt you.””
My hands shook.
“Ethan, Lily is your daughter.””
I stopped breathing.
The entire room froze.
The recording continued.
“Not because of DNA.””
A pause.
“Because you are the only father she has ever known.””
I closed my eyes.
Tears fell.
Then Emily said something that changed everything.
“But there is one person who knows the entire truth.””
The recording stopped.
Static.
Everyone waited.
The attorney looked at the device.
“It’s incomplete.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
She looked confused.
“Emily recorded another part.””
“Where is it?””
Before she could answer…
The church lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then a single sound echoed.
A door opening.
Someone walked inside.
And when the lights returned…
The missing recording was sitting on the altar.
Beside it was a note.
May you like
Written in Emily’s handwriting.
*Ethan, this is the person I was protecting you from.*
