Chapter 8: The Man Emily Trusted
I knew that voice.
But I didn’t want to believe it.
Slowly, I turned around.
Marcus stood near the church entrance.
My best friend.
My brother in everything but blood.
The man who helped me bury my wife.
The man who held Lily when she cried.
The man who just admitted something with one word.
“Me.””
My stomach dropped.
“What did you just say?””
Marcus looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying a secret for years.
“I’m the reason Emily was scared.””
The church erupted.
My mother covered her mouth.
“Marcus?””
He looked at her sadly.
“I’m sorry.””
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t even think.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“Knew what?””
“That Vanessa was manipulating things.””
My fists tightened.
“And you said nothing?””
“I tried.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You didn’t.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“By lying?””
His face fell.
“I was trying to protect Lily.””
I looked at my daughter.
She was watching all of this with frightened eyes.
I lowered my voice.
“Not in front of her.””
Marcus nodded.
He looked ashamed.
“I know.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
A cold, broken laugh.
“Finally.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at Marcus.
“He’s the one who caused all of this.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Don’t.””
“You think you’re a hero?””
“No.””
“You destroyed everything.””
I stepped between them.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire spoke.
“Marcus found out Vanessa was lying.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
Claire looked at Marcus.
He closed his eyes.
“Because Emily told me.””
My heart hurt.
“She told you?””
“Yes.””
Marcus swallowed.
“The night she died.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Emily called me.””
I remembered.
The hospital.
The late-night phone calls.
The day everything ended.
“What did she say?””
Marcus looked down.
“She said she made a mistake.””
My chest tightened.
“What mistake?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“Trusting Vanessa.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s a lie.””
Marcus ignored her.
“Emily had evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“She found out Vanessa had been creating fake problems between you two.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Marcus looked at Lily.
“Because Emily asked me not to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She was afraid if you confronted Vanessa, she would disappear with information about Lily.””
My heart sank.
“What information?””
Marcus took a deep breath.
“Vanessa had been researching guardianship laws.””
The room went quiet.
My daughter’s future.
Her safety.
Everything.
Marcus continued.
“She wanted legal control over Lily.””
Vanessa screamed.
“That’s not true!””
Claire stepped forward.
“Then why did you download custody forms?””
Vanessa froze.
I looked at her.
“You did?””
No answer.
That was enough.
I felt something break inside me.
Not love.
That had already died.
Trust.
The last piece of trust.
I looked at Marcus.
“Why today?””
He looked at the altar.
“Because I knew she would try something at the wedding.””
“What?””
“She wanted witnesses.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Because after the ceremony, she planned to announce that Lily was moving in with her.””
The room gasped.
My arms immediately went around Lily.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I saw the paperwork.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“Where is it?””
She didn’t answer.
Claire slowly lifted her folder.
“Right here.””
She opened it.
Inside was a stack of legal documents.
The top page had Lily’s name.
And below it…
A signature.
Not mine.
Not Emily’s.
Vanessa’s.
But there was something else.
A second signature.
May you like
One that made Marcus stop breathing.
Because it belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
