Chapter 17: The Father I Never Knew
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood what Emily’s words meant.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Someone who had been part of my life.
I looked at every person standing there.
Marcus.
My father.
Claire.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
My mind searched for an answer.
But my heart already feared one.
My father noticed my expression.
“Ethan.””
I looked at him.
“Did you know?””
His face changed.
A painful silence.
That silence answered before his words did.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No?””
He stepped forward.
“I swear to you, I didn’t know.””
“Then why do you look like you know what I’m talking about?””
My father looked at the letter.
Then away.
“I knew Emily was hiding something.””
“What?””
“She asked me a question.””
“What question?””
He swallowed.
“She asked if I would still love Lily if I learned something unexpected about her.””
My chest tightened.
“When?””
“Two weeks before she died.””
I stared at him.
“And you never told me?””
“She made me promise.””
My anger exploded.
“Everyone made promises!””
My voice echoed through the church.
“And everyone lied!””
Lily flinched.
I immediately stopped.
I lowered my voice.
“I’m sorry.””
I walked toward her.
She looked scared.
Not of me.
Of everything.
I knelt.
“Nothing changes.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
I touched her hand.
“You’re my daughter.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Always?””
“Always.””
That was the only truth I had left.
The attorney cleared her throat.
“There’s more in Emily’s letter.””
I looked up.
“What?””
She pointed to the envelope.
“There was another page.””
I opened it.
The handwriting became harder to read.
Like Emily was struggling.
*Ethan, I need you to understand something. Biology does not make a father. Love does.*
My vision blurred.
*But if the truth comes out, someone may try to convince you that Lily belongs to them. They are wrong.*
I took a shaky breath.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
*The man who helped create Lily was not the man who raised her.*
My heart stopped.
Nobody moved.
The attorney looked at me.
“Emily never named him.””
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of him?””
She nodded.
“Of what he would do.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Ethan…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“I might know who she meant.””
The room froze.
My voice dropped.
“Who?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then looked at my father.
“No.””
My father stepped back.
“Marcus.””
Marcus looked devastated.
“I didn’t want to believe it.””
My heart started racing.
“Believe what?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Emily once told me she discovered the truth after comparing old medical records.””
“Whose records?””
He looked at me.
“Yours.””
My blood ran cold.
“Mine?””
Marcus nodded.
“She found something strange about your original paternity test.””
The room went silent.
I felt dizzy.
“My paternity test?””
“Yes.””
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“I never had a paternity test.””
Marcus looked at me.
“That’s the problem.””
Everyone stared.
“What are you saying?””
Marcus whispered:
“Someone changed the records before you ever saw them.””
My father’s face went pale.
“Richard.””
The name came out quietly.
Like a realization.
I turned.
“What?””
My father looked at me.
“Richard handled the legal paperwork when Lily was born.””
The pieces connected.
Too perfectly.
Richard had access.
Richard had motive.
Richard had been there.
And now he wanted Lily.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
Calm.
Confident.
“You finally found the truth.””
My blood turned cold.
“Richard.””
A quiet laugh.
“So Emily did leave you something.””
I stepped away from everyone.
“What do you want?””
The man laughed softly.
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
“Then what should I ask?””
A pause.
Then:
“Ask why Emily never told you Lily was never in danger from me.””
I froze.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“She was protecting you from the truth.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What truth?””
May you like
His answer destroyed me.
“The truth that Lily was never your daughter.””
