Chapter 11: The Choice Emily Made Before Dying
I couldn’t look away from the document.
Every word felt impossible.
Every sentence felt like another piece of my life falling apart.
Emily had created an emergency guardianship plan.
Without telling me.
My first emotion wasn’t anger.
It was pain.
Because I thought we had no secrets.
I thought we were a team.
But maybe, in her final days, Emily had been fighting a battle I never knew existed.
“Ethan.””
Marcus’s voice pulled me back.
I looked at him.
“Read it.””
I looked down again.
The document explained the trust.
The legal protections.
The conditions.
Then I saw the name.
The temporary guardian.
My hands froze.
“What?””
Everyone watched my face.
I couldn’t speak.
My mother stepped closer.
“What is it?””
I slowly looked up.
“It’s Claire.””
The room went silent.
Claire closed her eyes.
Like she had been waiting years for that moment.
Vanessa stared at her sister.
“No.””
Claire whispered:
“Yes.””
I looked between them.
“Emily chose you?””
Claire nodded.
“She didn’t trust anyone else.””
My chest tightened.
“Not me?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“She trusted you more than anyone.””
“Then why?””
Claire looked at Lily.
“Because she knew you would be devastated if something happened.””
I didn’t understand.
“She was protecting you?””
“She was protecting both of you.””
Claire walked closer.
“Emily knew you loved Lily. But she also knew you were grieving. She worried someone could manipulate you.””
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
Nobody said her name.
Nobody needed to.
The truth was standing there.
Claire continued.
“She told me, ‘If Ethan ever chooses someone who doesn’t love Lily, don’t let my daughter pay the price.’”
My throat tightened.
Emily’s voice.
I could almost hear it.
The way she used to say Lily’s name.
The way she always worried.
I looked at my daughter.
She was sitting beside my mother, holding her stuffed rabbit.
Completely unaware of the legal war happening around her.
A child.
A child everyone was fighting over.
And nobody asked what she wanted.
I walked to her.
I kneeled.
“Lily?””
She looked at me.
“Yes, Daddy?””
“Do you remember seeing this man?””
I pointed toward Daniel.
She nodded.
“Only once.””
“When?””
She looked down.
“The day Vanessa yelled at me.””
My heart broke.
“What happened?””
Lily rubbed her fingers together.
“Vanessa told him I was difficult.””
Daniel looked away.
Shame crossed his face.
I noticed.
“You were there?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing?””
His face tightened.
“I didn’t understand what was happening.””
I stood.
“You were watching my daughter being hurt.””
“I know.””
His answer surprised me.
No excuse.
No defense.
Just guilt.
I turned away.
Because I didn’t know who to hate anymore.
Vanessa.
Her father.
Daniel.
Myself.
Everyone had failed Lily.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“I know you hate me.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know what I feel.””
She nodded.
“That’s fair.””
A strange silence followed.
Then she said something I never expected.
“Your daughter saved me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
“She showed me what my father was really doing.””
Nobody moved.
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“He never wanted me to marry you because he loved me.””
She laughed sadly.
“He wanted me close to Lily.””
My stomach turned.
“To control her?””
“Yes.””
The confession echoed.
I looked at Daniel.
He didn’t deny it.
That was when I understood.
Vanessa wasn’t the entire enemy.
She was another person caught in something bigger.
But that didn’t erase what she did.
Not to Lily.
Not to me.
Daniel suddenly looked at his watch.
“We don’t have much time.””
I turned.
“What?””
“Your daughter’s inheritance documents become active tomorrow.””
I frowned.
“And?””
“And if the wrong person gains temporary control before then…”
He paused.
“Lily could be taken away legally.””
The church erupted again.
My entire body went cold.
“Who can take her?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“The person who filed the original petition.””
I grabbed the document.
“Who filed it?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
“The person Emily was trying to protect Lily from.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the church doors.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your own father.””
