Chapter 7: The Woman at the Door

The church doors opened slowly.

Every head turned.

For a moment, I thought I was seeing things.

The woman standing in the doorway looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

Broken.

But alive.

My breath disappeared.

“Emily?””

The name escaped my mouth before my brain could stop it.

Then reality hit me.

Emily was dead.

She had been gone for three years.

The woman standing there wasn’t my wife.

It was Claire.

Vanessa’s sister.

She stepped into the church holding a small bag and a folder pressed against her chest.

The same woman Vanessa had called unstable.

The same woman who had disappeared after warning me.

Vanessa’s face turned white.

“You.””

Claire looked at her.

“You didn’t think I’d come?””

Nobody moved.

Nobody even whispered.

Claire walked down the aisle slowly.

“I should have come sooner.””

My heart was pounding.

“What is going on?””

Claire stopped in front of me.

Her eyes moved to Lily.

And immediately, they filled with tears.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

Lily stared at her cautiously.

Claire lowered herself.

“I’m sorry.””

Lily looked at me.

I nodded gently.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.””

Claire swallowed hard.

“I knew Emily. I knew what she was afraid of.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Claire ignored her.

“She asked me to keep something safe.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Claire opened the folder.

“Proof.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharp.

“You’re lying.””

Claire looked at her sister.

“No, Vanessa. I’m finally telling the truth.””

The church became completely silent.

I looked between them.

“You two knew something was going to happen?””

Claire looked down.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

She took a deep breath.

“Emily started noticing things after she met Vanessa.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Oh, here we go.””

Claire continued.

“She noticed missing documents. Strange phone calls. Things moved around in the house.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She thought you were stealing?””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

A pause.

“She thought Vanessa was preparing.””

“For what?””

Claire looked at Lily.

“For control.””

The word felt heavy.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She’s making me look evil because she hates me.””

Claire’s expression broke.

“I don’t hate you.””

She looked at her sister.

“I loved you.””

The sentence shocked everyone.

“But you changed.””

Vanessa looked away.

Claire continued.

“When Emily got sick, Vanessa started asking questions.””

“What questions?””

Claire looked at me.

“About your finances. Your home. Your daughter.””

My blood ran cold.

“She was investigating my family?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

“Because I was trying to help!””

Everyone jumped.

“I saw things Emily didn’t want to admit!””

Claire turned toward her.

“You mean the lies you created?””

Vanessa froze.

I stepped closer.

“What lies?””

Claire reached into the folder.

“She told Emily that Ethan was planning to move away with Lily.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“That’s not—”

“She told Emily you were looking for another job in another state.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“I never did that.””

“I know.””

Claire’s voice softened.

“Emily found out.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“How?””

“She checked your emails. Your messages. Everything.””

Claire looked at Lily.

“She realized Vanessa was creating fear.””

My hands shook.

All those conversations.

All those nights Emily cried.

I remembered them.

I remembered asking what was wrong.

And Emily always said:

“Nothing. I’m just tired.””

Because she didn’t want to destroy my trust.

Because she was trying to protect everyone.

Claire handed me another envelope.

“This was the last thing Emily gave me.””

I looked at it.

“My wife wrote another letter?””

Claire nodded.

“She told me not to give it to you unless Vanessa tried to become part of Lily’s life permanently.””

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

The timing.

The wedding.

The document.

Everything.

Vanessa looked terrified now.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

I looked at her.

“Then explain.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was trying to fix what Emily couldn’t.””

Nobody spoke.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

And for the first time, I saw something different in her face.

Not anger.

Not confidence.

Fear.

“Because Emily knew someone else was involved.””

My body went cold.

“Someone else?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Claire’s face changed.

Because she knew.

I looked at both sisters.

“Who?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer…

A man’s voice came from the back of the church.

“Me.””

May you like

Everyone turned.

And the person standing there made my entire world collapse.
