Chapter 10: The Stranger Who Knew My Daughter
The man walked into the church like he belonged there.
That was the part that frightened me most.
He wasn’t nervous.
He wasn’t confused.
He didn’t look like someone who had accidentally stepped into the middle of a disaster.
He looked like someone who had been waiting for this moment.
Rain dripped from his dark coat as he walked down the aisle.
Lily immediately grabbed my hand.
“Daddy, that’s him.””
I moved in front of her.
Protecting her was instinct.
Always had been.
“Who are you?””
The man stopped several feet away.
His eyes moved around the church.
Over the guests.
Over Claire.
Over Vanessa.
Then finally to me.
“Ethan Carter.””
I hated how calmly he said my name.
“Yes?””
He reached into his coat.
Several people gasped.
Marcus stepped forward.
But the man only pulled out a business card.
He held it toward me.
“My name is Daniel Reeves.””
I didn’t take it.
“What do you want?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“She knows.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“Don’t involve him.””
That one sentence told me everything.
“You know this man?””
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel sighed.
“I was hoping we could avoid this.””
I laughed quietly.
“Avoid what? The part where everyone discovers my fiancée was planning to take my daughter away?””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“You don’t understand.””
I was tired of hearing those words.
“I understand enough.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
“I’m not here to take your daughter.””
“Then why did she say you came to our house?””
He was silent.
A little too long.
That silence made my skin crawl.
“I came to deliver information.””
“Information about what?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“About the people who were actually controlling this.””
Claire stepped forward.
“You expect us to believe you?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“No.””
He pulled out another folder.
“That’s why I brought proof.””
Nobody moved.
The church had become a courtroom.
Every person waiting for the next piece of the truth.
I took the folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Messages.
Financial records.
My eyes scanned the pages.
Then I saw a name.
A company.
A payment.
My stomach tightened.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“Why did this company pay you?””
Her expression changed.
“I didn’t know.””
“You didn’t know someone transferred money into your account?””
She looked at Daniel.
“Tell him.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“I think Ethan deserves to hear it from you.””
Vanessa’s breathing became uneven.
For the first time, she looked trapped.
Not like someone hiding a secret.
Like someone who had been used.
I turned toward her.
“Who was behind this?””
She looked at Lily.
And then she whispered:
“My father.””
The church went silent.
I blinked.
“Your father?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He never liked you.””
“Why?””
“Because he thought you were wasting your life.””
I stared at her.
“That doesn’t explain any of this.””
She looked down.
“He wanted control.””
“Over what?””
Her voice became smaller.
“Over Lily.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
Then at Claire.
Then finally at me.
“Because your daughter inherited something.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emily discovered it before she died.””
My heart stopped.
“Discovered what?””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“The reason everyone has been fighting over her.””
I felt my daughter’s fingers tighten around mine.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel opened another document.
A legal document.
“This is the inheritance agreement Emily created.””
I stared.
“Lily’s inheritance?””
He nodded.
“Your late wife owned shares in a company before she died.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible. Emily didn’t own anything.””
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s what she wanted everyone to believe.””
The room erupted.
My mind spun.
Emily had secrets?
My wife?
The woman who told me everything?
The woman I thought I knew completely?
Daniel continued.
“She transferred ownership into a trust for Lily.””
My eyes moved to the papers.
“And Vanessa’s father wanted control.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I knew something.””
The confession hurt.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know the whole truth.””
“You still lied.””
She looked away.
“Yes.””
For the first time, she admitted it.
No excuses.
No anger.
Just guilt.
I looked at the woman who almost became my daughter’s stepmother.
“Why did you do it?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Because I thought I could protect Lily.””
I shook my head.
“By hurting her?””
She had no answer.
Then Daniel spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
He handed me one final document.
“Emily didn’t just create the trust.””
I read the first line.
And my heart stopped.
Because it was dated three days before she died.
The title was:
*Emergency Guardianship Protection Plan.*

And the first name listed as Lily’s protector was not mine.
It was someone else.
