Chapter 2: The Secret Vanessa Was Hiding
The church had never been so quiet.
Not even during funerals.
Every person who came to watch me get married was now staring at Vanessa like she was a stranger.
Because she was.
At least, that was what I felt.
The woman standing there was not the woman who held my hand when Lily had nightmares. She was not the woman who promised me she would love my daughter as her own.
She was someone I suddenly didn’t recognize.
Vanessa adjusted her veil and looked around the room.
“Ethan wants everyone to believe I’m some kind of monster,” she said.
“But nobody here knows what I’ve been dealing with.””
I tightened my arms around Lily.
My daughter buried her face against my shoulder.
My best friend Marcus stepped forward.
“Vanessa, maybe this isn’t the time.””
She ignored him.
“No. Everyone deserves to hear it.””
I looked at her.
“Hear what?””
She smiled sadly.
And that smile scared me.
“She’s been manipulating you for months.””
My stomach dropped.
“Don’t,” I said.
Vanessa pointed toward Lily.
“She knows exactly how to make you choose her.””
The room reacted instantly.
A few people gasped.
My mother stood up.
“Vanessa, she’s a child.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“And children can lie.””
The words hit the room like a slap.
I felt Lily pull tighter against me.
“Enough,” I said.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No, Ethan. You’re going to listen because I’m tired of being blamed.””
I remembered every night Lily had asked me if Vanessa was angry with her.
Every time I told her, “She loves you.””
Every time I believed it.
I had been wrong.
“Tell me exactly what happened upstairs,” I said.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She spilled juice on her dress.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Yes, it is.””
“Then why was she crying?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Only for a second.
But everyone noticed.
Marcus walked closer.
“Because you grabbed her?””
Vanessa looked offended.
“I barely touched her.””
Lily suddenly whispered, “Daddy…”
I looked down.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
She hesitated.
Her little fingers held onto my jacket.
“She said you wouldn’t believe me.””
My chest tightened.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What did you say to my daughter?””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“I was trying to teach her consequences.””
“She’s six.””
“She’s not helpless.””
“No,” I said.
“She’s a child.””
The pastor quietly stepped away from the altar.
Guests began leaving.
But Vanessa wasn’t finished.
She reached into her purse.
“I have proof.””
Everyone stopped.
She pulled out her phone.
“I recorded things because I knew this would happen.””
My heart raced.
“What did you record?””
She pressed the screen.
“I recorded Lily saying she didn’t want us to get married.””
A murmur moved through the crowd.
Vanessa looked at me.
“She has been trying to destroy our relationship.””
I stared at the phone.
Then at Lily.
My daughter looked terrified.
“Daddy, I didn’t…”
“I know,” I whispered.
Vanessa lifted the phone higher.
“Do you want everyone to hear it?””
Nobody spoke.
For a moment, I wondered if I had missed something.
Had I ignored signs?
Had I failed to understand what was happening in my own home?
Then Lily whispered something so quietly that only I heard it.
“She made me say it.””
My blood ran cold.
I looked at my daughter.
“What do you mean?””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“She locked me in the bathroom and told me what words to say.””
The room froze.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
I took one step forward.
“Vanessa.””
She lowered the phone.
“Ethan, don’t listen to her.””
But before I could answer, my phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
One sentence.
One picture attachment.
May you like
And the name at the top of the message made my hands go numb.
Because it was someone who had been trying to warn me for months.
