Chapter 6: The Document That Changed Everything

I couldn’t breathe.

Not because of Vanessa.

Not because of the people watching.

Because of that signature.

Emily’s signature.

I knew every curve of it.

Every small detail.

She signed birthday cards.

Medical forms.

Our first apartment lease.

That signature was real.

And Vanessa knew it.

“Where did you get that?”” I asked.

Vanessa held the folder against her chest.

“From Emily.””

“That’s impossible.””

“She gave it to me.””

The church erupted.

“No,” I whispered.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“She knew you would never listen if it came from anyone else.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

She opened the folder.

“I can prove it.””

Marcus moved toward her.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t get to protect him anymore.””

That sentence caught my attention.

“Protect me from what?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Marcus.

Then Vanessa.

Then the document.

“Read it.””

Vanessa handed it to me.

I took the paper.

The first line made my heart stop.

*Temporary Guardianship Agreement.*

My eyes moved down.

It mentioned Lily.

It mentioned Emily.

And then I saw the name.

A guardian.

Someone who would take care of Lily if something happened to Emily.

Someone who wasn’t me.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Emily didn’t trust you.””

The words cut deep.

“No.””

“She knew you loved Lily. But she also knew you were emotional. She worried you wouldn’t make the right decisions.””

I kept reading.

The document named a temporary guardian.

But there was something strange.

Something wrong.

I looked closer.

The date.

The date was after Emily’s death.

My confusion turned into anger.

“Vanessa.””

She froze.

“This document was signed after Emily died.””

The room went silent.

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

A crack.

A tiny moment of panic.

Marcus noticed too.

“Ethan…”

I handed him the paper.

He read it quickly.

Then his face changed.

“This isn’t right.””

Vanessa’s voice became defensive.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus pointed at the page.

“Emily’s signature is real.””

I stared at him.

“But?””

“But the notary stamp is dated two months after her funeral.””

The church went completely silent.

My heartbeat filled my ears.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You forged this.””

“No.””

“You altered a legal document.””

“No!””

Her voice echoed.

For the first time, she looked scared.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Scared.

I took a step toward her.

“How long have you been planning this?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

From Claire.

This time, there was a video attached.

I pressed play.

The screen showed Vanessa.

In my house.

In Lily’s room.

Talking to someone.

My blood froze when I heard her voice.

“I just need him to marry me before he finds out.””

The video continued.

Vanessa looked directly at the camera.

And said:

“Once I’m her legal stepmother, nobody can take Lily away from me.””

The church gasped.

I felt Lily grab my hand.

“Daddy?””

I looked down at my daughter.

Then back at the screen.

Vanessa realized everyone had heard.

Her face went completely pale.

But before anyone could speak…

She whispered something that made me realize the nightmare was even bigger.

“I wasn’t trying to take Lily away from you.””

She looked at me.

“I was trying to stop someone else from taking her.””

May you like

And then she turned toward the church doors.

Because standing there was the one person nobody expected to see.
