Chapter 9: The Paper That Never Should Have Existed
My father didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
I had spent my entire life learning his expressions.
I knew when he was happy.
I knew when he was worried.
I knew when he was hiding something.
And right now, he was terrified.
“What adoption papers?””
He sat down slowly.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Not this time.””
His eyes filled.
“Please.””
“Every time I ask a question, someone tells me I’m not ready.””
I pointed toward the documents on the table.
“I was ready when I was born.””
The silence was heavy.
Finally, my father reached for the folder.
“There were adoption papers.””
I stared.
“You adopted me?””
He shook his head.
“Not exactly.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
He pulled out a document.
“This was created after you were taken from Claire.””
I read the heading.
Legal Guardianship Agreement.
My heart raced.
“Explain.””
My father looked ashamed.
“Robert arranged it.””
“Of course he did.””
“He wanted to make sure nobody could challenge his control.””
I looked at the signature section.
My father’s name was there.
Daniel Carter.
I looked up.
“You signed this.””
His voice cracked.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Robert gave me a choice.””
“What choice?””
He looked at me.
“The choice to lose you forever or become your legal father.””
I stared at him.
“That’s not a choice.””
“I know.””
He wiped his eyes.
“I was twenty-two years old. I had no money. No power. Robert had everything.””
I looked back at the paper.
“So he forced you.””
“Yes.””
“And Claire?””
“She never saw this document.””
My jaw tightened.
“She thought you were dead.””
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
Then I noticed something.
A date.
The document was signed three days after my birth.
But there was another signature.
A witness.
I looked closer.
My breathing stopped.
“What?””
My father followed my eyes.
His face changed.
“What is it?””
I pointed.
“Who is this?””
The signature belonged to my aunt.
My father went pale.
“She witnessed it.””
“She helped.””
He nodded slowly.
I felt something inside me break.
The family I grew up with wasn’t built on love.
It was built on secrets.
I grabbed my jacket.
“Where are you going?””
“To see her.””
“Ethan, wait.””
I turned.
“For eighteen years, everyone else decided what I could handle.””
My voice shook.
“I’m done being the last person to know my own story.””
My aunt agreed to meet at a quiet restaurant.
She was already there when I arrived.
She looked older than I remembered.
Smaller.
Like guilt had been slowly consuming her.
“Ethan.””
I sat across from her.
“Tell me why.””
She looked down.
“I was young.””
“No.””
My voice was cold.
“You were an adult.””
She swallowed.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She was silent for a long time.
Finally, she whispered:
“Robert was my father too.””
I froze.
“What?””
She nodded.
“Before you were born, I discovered the truth.””
My mind raced.
“About Claire?””
“Yes.””
“And you helped him anyway?””
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“I thought I was protecting my family.””
“You protected a monster.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
I waited.
“Why did you sign those papers?””
She squeezed her hands together.
“Because Robert told me if I didn’t, he would destroy Daniel.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone had an excuse.””
She looked at me.
“But there’s something you don’t know.””
I stared.
“What?””
She leaned closer.
“The night you were taken…”
She lowered her voice.
“Robert wasn’t trying to keep you away from Claire.””
My heart started pounding.
“Then what was he trying to do?””
She looked terrified.
“He was trying to erase your identity completely.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He planned to change your name.””
The room felt colder.
“Why?””
My aunt looked at me.
“Because he was afraid someone would discover who your real biological father was.””
I froze.
“But we already know.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“The birth certificate Emily showed you…”
She took a breath.
“It was changed.””
I stared.
“What?””
My aunt whispered:
“Robert wasn’t your biological father.””
The world stopped.
“Then who was?””
She reached into her purse and pulled out an old hospital record.
A name was written at the top.
A name I recognized.
A name that made me understand why everyone had lied.
“Ethan…”
May you like
She pushed the paper toward me.
“Your real father is the one person you never suspected.””
