Chapter 14: The Person Who Never Left

The photograph sat on the table between us.

Nobody wanted to touch it.

Because touching it meant accepting what it suggested.

Robert was not the only person hiding something.

Emily zoomed in.

Her fingers trembled.

“Look at the background.””

I leaned closer.

Behind the four people was a building.

An old warehouse.

I recognized it.

I had been there once.

Years ago.

“Where is this?””

Claire looked at it.

Her face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

“What?””

She pointed.

“That was Robert’s private property.””

I stared.

“Private property?””

“Yes.””

“Why would you all be there?””

Nobody answered.

That silence was becoming unbearable.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew about this?””

His face appeared on the phone screen as he answered immediately.

“What happened?””

I held up the photograph.

There was a long pause.

“Where did you get that?””

“Answer me.””

His voice lowered.

“Ethan, listen carefully.””

“No.””

I felt my anger rising.

“You listen.””

Everyone went quiet.

“I am done discovering my life piece by piece.””

Daniel sighed.

“Okay.””

A pause.

“I was there.””

My heart sank.

“When?””

“Five years ago.””

Claire looked shocked.

“You never told me.””

Daniel ignored her.

“Why?””

“Because I thought the past was over.””

I laughed.

“Clearly it wasn’t.””

Emily looked at me.

“Ethan, ask him who else was there.””

I held the phone tighter.

“Who else?””

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

“Your aunt.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

The same name.

The same person.

Always connected.

“What happened at the warehouse?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Robert left something behind.””

“He was dead.””

“Yes.””

“Then what?””

“A recording.””

The room went still.

“A recording of what?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Of him explaining everything.””

My heart pounded.

“You heard it?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Robert’s final message wasn’t just a confession.””

I waited.

“It was a warning.””

The call went silent.

“About what?””

Daniel took a breath.

“He said someone else had been controlling things.””

My eyes moved toward the photograph.

“Who?””

Daniel answered:

“We didn’t know.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“We only knew one thing.””

“What?””

“Robert was afraid of them.””

That was the first time I had heard anyone say Robert Carter was afraid.

And somehow that scared me more.

The next morning, Daniel brought the recording.

We met at Emily’s apartment.

The old audio file played through a small speaker.

Robert’s voice filled the room.

Even after death, he sounded powerful.

“If you’re hearing this, then I failed.””

Nobody moved.

“I spent years believing I was the person pulling every string.””

A pause.

“But I wasn’t.””

My skin prickled.

Robert continued.

“There was someone smarter.””

Claire covered her mouth.

“Someone who knew how to make people obey without threatening them.””

The recording crackled.

“Someone who convinced me they were helping me.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Emily.

Then Claire.

Robert’s voice became weaker.

“I should have listened when they warned me.””

The audio stopped.

Everyone froze.

“That’s it?”” I asked.

Daniel nodded.

“That’s all we found.””

I stared at him.

“Who was the person?””

Nobody answered.

Then Emily spoke.

“There was one more thing.””

She reached for a folder.

“A week after Robert died, someone accessed his files.””

“Who?””

She opened the document.

The name was listed.

My stomach dropped.

Because I knew it.

Everyone knew it.

The person who had accessed Robert’s files was someone who had been beside me since childhood.

Someone who had comforted me.

Someone who had protected me.

Someone I never questioned.

May you like

Emily whispered:

“The person who inherited Robert’s entire estate.””
