Chapter 13: The Truth My Mother Buried

Claire stood in the doorway holding a single sheet of paper.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Emily.

Not even Claire.

The woman I had spent my entire life believing was gone was standing in front of me again, but this time she looked different.

Not like a victim.

Like someone carrying a secret.

My anger arrived before my emotions could catch up.

“You knew?””

Claire’s face crumpled.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Not again.””

She stepped inside slowly.

“I can explain.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone says that.””

Emily stood beside me.

“Claire, you need to tell him everything.””

Claire looked at her.

“I know.””

I stared at the paper in her hand.

“What is that?””

She looked down.

“A letter.””

“From who?””

Her silence answered.

“Robert.””

My grandfather.

Again.

Always him.

I shook my head.

“I’m starting to think that man controlled my entire life even after he died.””

Claire looked at the letter.

“He did.””

That surprised me.

Because I expected her to defend him.

Instead, she looked exhausted.

“Ethan, I need you to understand something.””

I crossed my arms.

“I understand that everyone knew things except me.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I know how that feels.””

The words were quiet.

And for some reason, they hurt.

Because she wasn’t wrong.

She had lost me too.

But I couldn’t forget.

“You let me think you were dead.””

Her face broke.

“I know.””

“You let me hate a ghost.””

“I know.””

“You let me believe you left me.””

She covered her mouth.

“I never left you.””

“Then why?””

The question came out softer than I expected.

Why?

Why did everyone choose silence?

Claire sat down.

“When Robert took you, I spent years trying to find you.””

She looked at the floor.

“I searched hospitals. Records. Schools. Anything.””

“And?””

“He always erased the trail.””

I looked at Emily.

“She helped me.””

Emily nodded.

“But we couldn’t get close.””

“Why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because Robert made sure you were protected by people who loved you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he knew taking you away physically wasn’t enough.””

The room went quiet.

“He knew Daniel would fight. He knew I would fight. So he did something smarter.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“He made everyone afraid.””

I looked at the letter.

“What does Robert say?””

Claire handed it to me.

I unfolded it.

Ethan,

You will eventually learn the truth. I always knew you would.

My hands tightened.

I hate that I recognized his voice even on paper.

I wanted you to have the life I never had. A powerful family. A name that mattered.

But I made the mistake of believing control was protection.

I looked up.

“He admits it.””

Claire nodded.

“There’s more.””

I kept reading.

Daniel loved you. More than I expected.

That was why I hated him.

Because he gave you something I could never force.

A choice.

My eyes stopped.

A choice.

Robert understood.

He just hated it.

The letter continued.

I know Ethan will one day ask why nobody told him.

The answer is simple.

Because I made sure they believed silence was safer.

I folded the letter.

My anger felt different now.

Not smaller.

Sharper.

“He manipulated everyone.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“Even you?””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

“He convinced me that if I exposed him, you would disappear again.””

I swallowed.

“Did you believe him?””

She looked at me.

“For a while.””

That honesty hurt.

But it also felt real.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A notification.

A new message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Claire.

Daniel.

Emily.

And Robert.

Standing together.

The date was only five years ago.

My heart stopped.

That was impossible.

Robert had been dead for six years.

Below the picture was a message.

“You still think Robert was the biggest liar?””

I looked at Emily.

Then Claire.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone had the same question.

If Robert was dead…

Who had taken that photograph?
